Knocking noise

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra Z71. A couple of months ago I had a knocking noise coming from under my feet, where the pedals are. The dealer thought it was what I've seen you call the "intermediate steering shaft knock" on another post.

They came back and told me that the found that the body of the truck was shifting, causing that knocking noise. They claimed to have fixed it by inserting some shims in between the body and frame.

That noise went away, but now I have the noise in the steering. I hear it at slow speeds when I turn. It's very annoying.

Is there a fix for this? The dealer mentioned that it's a know problem, but one they've yet to discover a permamnat fix for. They say they've replaced a bunch of some type of bar, but that they problem keeps coming up.

I still have not taken the truck in, but plan to do so this week.

Any suggestions?

There's a new design intermediate steering shaft for the knocking noise, but a 2005 already has it. Still, I have heard of the new design shaft making noise too. Haven't seen it myself though.

They could replace the shaft, but you'd get the same kind you have now. They could lube it as we used to do before they redesigned the shaft, and that would probably work just as well, but it may not be a permanent fix.

So I have to deal with it? Has it been said to affect the steering, cause on the highway the handling is poor, and it now pulls hard to the left.

Is there an after-market or performance type shaft available that may solve the problem?

Where should I be idling?  Should it be different when in park that when in Drive and the foot on the brake?

It should be idling at whatever the PCM wants it to idle at, which could vary based on a number of factors. There is no specification that I can give you.

So, you'd need to go in with a scanner and look at actual idle speed versus desired. If they match or are very close, it is doing what it should.
