I have a 98 Silverado. If you need to know more its in my signature. I have some problems with my brakes. I have posted about this before but its worse.

I have had the rotors turned and the pads are over 50%. I talked to my service guys and they said it can be a few things on these trucks. The ABS is fine it chirps like it should. I have had suggestions to change the brake fluid, but I am not sure that will cure the problem. Some suggestions have been made about replacing the booster but my serviceman said that he isn't sure that would cure it either. I would like any kind of suggestion.

Thanks

What is the problem that you are having?

The brake pedal goes almost down to the floor when I try to stop the truck. Its terrible. I pray everytime that I drive that I don't have to make any sudden stops because I am afraid that it won't be able to stop that fast.

My 2003 had a similar condition. Was fine if i used the brakes in stop and go traffic but if on a 15 minute trip with no use of the brakes the pedal would go down too far before starting to work.

Took it to the dealer and they replaced the master cylinder...it was leaking somewhere...... :D

I agree with trever1t. I think the master cylinder is a pretty likely candiate. Have they repalced it?

Im having what I think is the same issue with my truck (95 1500 2wd). It feels like there is a ton of air in the lines because the pedal is 1/2way to the flor before they star to catch...its really bad if its slippery out, the truck does not stop. I adjusted the rear drums, pads are all in good condition front and rear, new fluid and lines fully bled.

When my g/f was pumping the pedal, brake fluid was gurgling in the reservoir. Is that an indicator that the master cylinder is bad?

Yes, it is normal to see some fluid gurgling back into the master cylinder when the brakes are pumped. But, it does sound like you may have a bad master cylinder based on your other comments.

So maybe the master cylinder is bad.  How would the master cylinder cause the brakes to fail.

The master cylinder is the "pump" that creates pressure in the brake lines, calipers and wheel cylinders. No pressure...... no brakes.....

Master cylinder. Most likely it is between the front and rear sections. Most of the braking is done with the front brakes, one section of the cylinder and the lesser percentage of braking is done with the rear brakes. You are loosing pressure on the front brakes to the rear brakes. You pedal does not seem firm untill the rear brakes are at max and then the front brakes finally start to engage as they should.
