Exhast system

I want to either build a dual exhaust system or buy one. What do you all recomend? I was checking out under my truck the other day and noticed the crossover pipe from the left manifold to the left one was tiny! I think no more than 2 inches. Should I run 2 1/2 or 3 inch tubing? Also, what do you recomend from flowmaster? 40 series? 50 series? Or if building one is not recomended, which aftermarket ones are good?

I put on a 50 series. It's not too loud and its not quiet. Plus while cruzing down the freeway it does not resonate the inside of the cab like a lot of trucks do with loud exhausts.

What diameter tubing would you use? 2 1/2?

My truck comes stock with 2 3/4". So, I just got a 2 1/2" muffler and flared out the ends so I could weld it on. thats what the exhaust shops said that they would do, It only cost me $90 for the muffler. they didnt suggest swaping out the entire piping to add 3". there wouldnt be much difference from the 2 3/4" thats there now.

I'm talking about an entire new exhaust system. Manifold to polsihed tips. Would 2 1/2 inch tubing sufice, or would you suggest 2 3/4? I could do either. I have a bender that can wedge as well, a welder, and I can easily get tubing and a muffler.

the 2.5 would be fine. I've looked at exhaust manufacturer's websites and thats what they suggest for motors between 300-400 hp. so that would be fine and you will still keep a lot of power at low rpms, if you went bigger, you will lose some low end power.

As a side note, why do you want a full new system? The performance shops around here state that if you haven't done anything to the motor or don't plan on anything big (blowers, turbos, NOS), the flow rate on stock is much higher than needed, the stock cats are usually not that restrictive at all either. The only way to get higher flowing is straighter pipes and bigger diameter, but you only need that big of gas flow on massively changed motors or if your plan on having you motor sit at 5000+ rpms all the time. The people that swap out there stuff just get a 'cooler' exhaust note and not much performance. The sound difference is mainly from just changing the muffler. Thats why I just swaped the muffler and put on a tip on mine it was very quick (30 minutes), easy, and cheap. Saved me over $450, muffler + tip cost me $140. Sounds and performs just the same as my buddy, with the same truck, but 2wd and he bought a whole cat back system from flowmaster for $600.

Sorry to rant, but to me it's just why spend more time and money on something to get the same effect? Thats $400 in my pocket that I plan on spending on a tune that would really make a difference.
