Vinyl top

I have been toying over the idea of not putting the vinyl top back on my 65 Impala. Believe it or not back in the day it came with a white vinyl top on a light blue painted car with a light blue interior. The color was almost silver or ice blue if you ask me.

Now should I go back with the vinyl when I get ready to finish the car or should I leave it off? I plan on painting the car a the dark blue indigo metallic color and was looking at putting a black vinyl top on it. The interior is going to be black as well, although I saw a really cool looking 66 chevy II with a grey leather interior in it. Now that was sweet. Anyway I'm not sure on which way to go. I have plenty of time to think it over but was wondering on it today. Is the durability of new vinyl tops any better than in the past? I will be keeping the car in the garage so it will not be out in the sun and weather but for the days I drive it.

Is rust around the back bottom sections of vinyls still an issue with todays modern urethane primer and finish coats that give a good seal?

Just not sure on which way I want to go. I would think a black vinyl would really set the car off and be different than most, not to mention it originally came with one even thought it was a white top.

What's everyone think?

Not really sure on the others, but I would try to go as original as possible if the car was mine. If the car isn't going to be used on a daily basis, the I don't see the harm in the vinyl top. I'd check around with shops that specialize in that sort of thing before you decide.

It's your personal preference. On Chip Foose's Overhaulin' show it seems like 25% of the time he'll put the vinyl back on. The 68/69 Chargers/Roadrunner don't look bad today with the vinyl. On a 65 Impala I myself don't think black or white would look that bad. I wouldn't do a contrast grey.

Now if you were talkin' 67/68 fastback....NO WAY with the vinyl.

I did grey vinyl on my '72 El Camino (it was white) along with matching grey carpet in the bed.

Everybody loved it...Heck the guy in the Honda that I t-boned (he ran a light) even commented on it as it was being loaded onto the flatbed. I almost punched him in the snotbox.
