Changing rear end fluid

Recommended Posts

I am going to change the fluid in my front and rear diffs tomorrow. Do I need to put in the anti-slip additive like you do on posi cars?

I have a 2004 2500hd ccsb 6.0 with 4.10s and a locking rear.

Yup, what Matt said!

Use the synthetic in the front too!

Might as well do the T-case while you're at it. 2 qts of GM blue Autotrac fluid is about the best for ALL t-cases, next choice is synthetic ATF.

never put gear lube in that t-case. to thick and it will burn up the clutches on side. only use GM blue Autotrac fluid

Info - Improved Automatic Transfer Case Fluid #99-04-21-006 - (Sep 2, 1999)

Improved Automatic Transfer Case Fluid

1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade

1998-2000 Chevrolet and GMC K/T 4-Wheel Drive Pickups and Utility Models

1999-2000 Chevrolet and GMC L Van Models

1999-2000 Oldsmobile Bravada

with Active Transfer Case (RPOs NP4, NP8)

Effective with vehicle production in late June of 1999, all active transfer cases on the above listed vehicles have been filled with Autotrak® II fluid, P/N 12378508 (P/N 10953626 in Canada). This fluid is a light blue color rather than the red color of the previous fluids and is the next generation Automatic Transfer Case Fluid. The fluid also contains a better friction modifier.

On the models listed above, the active transfer cases should only be serviced using P/N 12378508 (P/N 10953626 in Canada), even if the original fluid was the red Autotrak® fluid. The previous fluid and the new fluid can be mixed or topped off if necessary. The new Autotrak® II fluid will be the only available fluid once the supply of the old red Autotrak® fluid is exhausted on units older than stated above.

The Owner's Manuals and some service information will specify the incorrect fluid due to printing the information prior to the fluid change being introduced.

Should I use the autotrac fluid in my Manuel shift case? It's not autotrac. My service manual lists different fluids for the autotrac and Manuel.

Thanks guys.

Anyone know what else is involved in the 30,000 mile service GM recommends? Pretty sure it was diff fluid, front and rear, trans fluid, transfer case fluid and cleaning the carbon from the throttle body. Anything i forgot?

Oh, and they wanted $485 to do it for me. Maybe thats bc I overheard a technician who said 22 something for quart of synthetic 75W-90. That must be some good gear lube, bought my mobile 1 today for 9 bucks a quart...but you can read my rant about that dealership in the off-topic section.

GM Autotrack blue is the best fluid for ALL T-cases, manual included, but must be used for all Autotrac cases.

The dealer will usually change to the blue fluid on a manual case to cure noises.

As I mentioned, Blue is the best. Next choice for a manual box is synthetic ATF.

I am at the same point in maintaining my truck. Where did you find the capacity listing for the various parts?. ie front and rear diff. trans. transfer. My owners book list what type of fluid to use but not how much to buy. Thanks

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
