rear differential oil level

I just checked the rear differential oil level on my '06 Z71 and found the oil level to be about 3/4 iches to 1 inch below the lower edge of the oil filler plug opening in the differential housing. This is odd. the oil level seems too low to adequately lubricate the axle bearings. I assume there is only one filler plug in the pinion shaft housing near the front of the differential case on the right side. I did not see any drain plugs, so I assume one must unbolt the rear cover to drain the oil.

Anyway, is this the correct oil level? I stuck my little finger in the hole and I got my figer tip wet with oil about 3/4-1 inch below the hole lower edge. And if I need to add oil, it would be 75W90 synthetic oil for locking differentials, right?

What about the front differential? Have not checked it yet, but should the oil level also be below the filling plug opening? And what about the Autotrac?

Never mind, I just found this info in the owner's manual. For the rear differential, the proper fill level is from 5/8 inch to 1 5/8 inch below the bottom of the filler plug hole, for the front differential and the Autotrac transfer case, it is pretty much to the bottom edge of the filler hole. I guess there is a reason why they included the owner's manual with the truck.

With your first post I almost had to go outside and check mine. But then your second post came in so instead I went to the refrigerator and got a beer.

Actually, for the 2500HD the rear differential proper oil level is different. For the 6.0 engine it is 0 to 1/2 inch below the lower edge of the filler plug opening.
