Hitch Safe

The Hitch Safe doesn't seem too practicable, especially if you do a lot of towing. The best thing I have seen is a locking gas cap with combination lock to open and store keys, money, or whatever inside. I haven't seen them advertised lately. Only my thoughts

looking at the picture, I see it uses 4 thumbwheels for the combination. If this is a purely mechanical lock, this can be easily defeated in a relatively short time. THis kind of lock will only "keep an honest man honest".

Example, you pull you truck into the stadium parking lot for a game. you will be there at least two hours. In two hours the lock can be picked and the truck driven away using the keys you stored there.

In short, the HitchSafe is a 2 inch box that locks securely inside any 2-inch receiver hitch and will only unlock with a 4 digit code that you can program yourself.  The real feature that sets the HitchSafe apart from other methods of hiding a key or other belongings on your vehicle (such as a magnetic box or just simply hiding a key on the outside body), is that the HitchSafe cannot be removed from the vehicle or opened without your code. Which, by the way, can be one of 10,000 possible combinations.  (http://gm-trucks.com/home/content/view/261/1/)

10,000 may seem like a large number, but it really isn't. using a few hueirtics (rules of thumb), it doesn't take long to open these kinds of locks. for example, eliminate the combos with all four digits the same right away. Eliminate "obviouis' ones next (1234, 4321, etc). There are others, like using the digits of the license plate. Also, with these kinds of locks, many peeople only "roll" one digit so they can get back in quickly when they need to and it is usually the outer most ones. When all else fails, brute force the combo by starting at 0000, 0001 and so on going through all of them up to 9999.

I like the idea, but call me paranoid, I would want more numbers in the lock itself to increase the level of difficulty in "breaking the code." One more digit increases the possiblities to 100,000, A six digit combo has 1 million possibilties. These are a little more daunting. A thief may look for an easier target.

bummed.

I agree, not practicle. Hitches are made for hitches that hook to trailers. I know my truck has a hitch in it at all times, and am switching from a 2" ball to a 2&5/16" ball all the time.

May be kinda cool for the guys who don't tow though.

I have one. Got a great deal on it before it was released to the public. If you don't need to tow a lot it's great. It's hidden under the cover most would not know it's there. I felt it was safer than the hide a key. It's secure. It's not the cheap bicycle 4 combo lock. You can set the combination anyway you want. Just a bit more secure, peace of mind that the spare key is locked up and not available to anyone that finds it offhand or knows where to look. Keep the spare key and enough for full tank at the gas station in case I forget my wallet or need to make a phone call. It's solidly built. It's safer than the magnetic spare key holder which anyone can use. It's a deterent not a "bank vault"
