Valve seals?

Recommended Posts

My '04 with 22,000 miles on it seems to blow smoke when I run it hard I just figured it was running rich but I noticed it had a puff of smoke when I started it up today. I am guessing it is the valve seals? I haven't beat or abuse the truck. I was just wondering if this is common for these motors or most engines it general?

Is it using oil? If not its just rich running.

I've got an 03 with one valve seal going bad. Depends on the position of said valve at time of engine shutoff, whether oil will get down past the seal. So I have a 1 in 16 chance of getting the cloud at startup, and since I've been keeping track, its darn near about every 16 times I turn the key.

Hate to say it but Chevys' have been notorious for premature valve seal failure for eons. If it does it at startup it's a valve seal if it's hot and doing it, it's blow-by. I can't imagine blow-by @ 22,000 so I'd say valve seal. Black smoke is usually rich running, blue is oil, white is water/coolant.
