Does the front wheels have auto lockouts or is the front drivetrain locked all the time and engages just the transfer case? I have been told many different things.

There is a eletromanical device the unlocks the passenger side axel when not in 4 wheel drive. I uses some sort of heater to engaged the lock. Some times it takes longer than others to lock the front axel . There are some aftermarket parts the speed this up or even make it cable operated.

Stock setup is a thermal relay to lock in the front axle. It tends to fail if its not used a lot.

There is an electrical relay replacement available that locks the front axle a lot quicker.

I haven't heard anything about a cable engagement system, but it wouldn't surprise me.
