Rattle/Clunk - Driver Side Front End

Recommended Posts

have an '05 1/2 ton Crew Cab Silverado. At about 8000 miles, I began to hear a rattle / clunk in the front driver side area on uneven pavement.

1. 1st service appt ---- replaced driver side shock >> no change.

2. 2nd service appt ---- replaced intermediate steering shaft >>> no change

3. 3rd service appt ---- replaced front end body mounts >>> no change

I'm no mechanic, but it sounds like it has to do with compression and/or flexing of the front end when you either go over a bump, or across uneven pavement. Dealer is stumped. They don't have any other ideas --- and are unsure what to do.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I've lived w/this for 7,000 miles now and frankly, it's very discouraging. I can't be the only one experiencing this type of problem.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Same here. It actually feels like it's coming from my floor boards near the fire wall.

I just turn the radio up and hope nothing falls off.

I have a 2002 Sierra excab which had kind of a thump when turning on uneven ground. It took abt 4 trips to dealer for them to find problem. It turned out to be the rear torsion bar mount connecting torsion crossmember to frame. I found you could duplicate the sound reliably by rocking truck from side to side by pushing on the side of the cab which was demonstrated to the dealer and probably the only reason they fixed / found it.

I've been grumbling about this same problem for the last 7500 miles or so. I was reading some of the latest suggestions and rocked my truck back and forth and the sound came from.(believe it or not) the HOOD. I hear all that rattling, etc and it felt like it was coming from my steering column or ? well the truck made that annoying sound too and my son said it was coming from the hood. We extended the bushings up alittle (the ones that the engine hood rests on) and the noise (believe it or not) stopped. Try tightening yours up it might work. I know it sounds silly, but what have you got to lose except....some noise? (smile) Hope it helps

Thank you ill try that and see if that is the problem..thanks -Travis

oops! I'm sorry. I reported the info about the hood but forgot to try it out on the road afterwards. It did eliminate part of the noise. I still hear the little bit of a rattle/clunking sound still when going over certain bumps too. Just not as bad with the hood tightened up. I'm going to see what else I can find 'cause I know exactly how you feel about the noise. it's drivimg me crazy and makes me want to get rid of this otherwise a gorgeous trruck!

Hey guys.....Just came upon this post and I had to register to tell you what's going on with the problem you guys or having. I have an 05 Sierra Crew Z71 5.3 and I started getting all the sypmptoms everyone has posted. Everytime I drove over uneven ground, where the vehicle's weight shifted, I would get this grinding noise underneath my floorboard that is annoying as hell.

I took it to my local dealership five times before they found out what it was. They messed with the body mounts, motor mounts, torsion bars....everything. They told me that they called around the Southwestern dealerships and nobody knew what it was. After every trip is sounded fine for a few days and then it would come back. Well on the last time I brought it in, the dealership told me that they had just received a recall (03-25-06) on the 2002-2006 sierra's and silverado's for the REAR LEAF SPRINGS. They said that might be the problem. Sure enough is was.

Take it to the dealership and have them change the rear leaf springs, both sides....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Trust me, that is the problem. Let me know what happens. I thought I was the only one with this problem.

My 05 Z71 ext cab did the exact same thing from day one.

If you have the side steps (nerf bars), remove the attaching bolt and lube the nylon bushing with a silicone based lube and re-torque the bolts. There are also several tsb's on the nerf bars relating to this problem. That's what was done to fix my problem.

Hey fossil....my truck did the same thing at first when I installed my nerf bars. You're right about lubing the bushing. It made a squeaking sound before I remounted the bracket on the nurf bar and re-torqued it. But this sound is totally different. I had this noise before I installed my nerf bars. But you are right about the nerf bars though.

Wierd, we all experience the same type of problems....Great site!!!!

Was it a recall or a TSB?

A "Recall" is a defective part(s) that the manufacture recognizes as being defective from numerous sources or complaints. Usually you'll get a letter in the mail from the dealership advises you on the part(s) and severatiy of the the problem and advises you to bring it in for service.

I still haven't received my so called "recall" on my rear leaf springs. Anyone else receive any recalls for the 05 Sierra Crew Z71 5.3's?

I'm confused. I have the same problem with my Sierra. How can it be the rear leaf springs if the noise is coming from the front of the truck?

I have 11k miles on my truck, and the popping noise is driving me crazy. I'm almost to the point of trading her in.
