'88 1500 Start Problems

My friend has a '88 Chev 1500 and sometimes when he goes to start it, it won't start. It happens after it has sit for a while. It cranks, but there is no spark or fuel. Then if he leaves it for a few hours, it'll fire right up. He has replaced the ignition module twice already with no good results.

Now it's time to look around the fuel system, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors.

My guess is that the fuel pump is on its way out. With the TBI trucks, you should be able to hear the fuel pump cycle on when the key gets to the "ON" (not start) position. If you don't hear it cycle on when the truck is having problems starting, the pump is the culprit.

 

I know this sounds ridiculous, but when the vehicle doesn't start, hit the bottom of the gas tank or push on the vehicle to get the gas sloshing around. Half of the time, this will kick a finicky pump back into working.

Are you sure about this? Could be the pick-up coil in the distributor. It should read 800 to 1200 ohms.

I'm sure. I checked for spark myself. Where do I measure this?

 

I'll tell him to try kicking the fuel tank and rocking it back and forth.
