Anyone go through this yet?

My 2001 z71 71,000kms 42,000 miles owned and baby since new got a vibration at slow speeds. 1st gear and it gets quiet as soon as it shifts. I took it in to my GM dealer (where I bought it new and did all service work to it) They charge me $50 bucks for a road test and said I need a new slip yoke. $750 + the $50 that 800 bucks CDN.

I get the truck back with same noise So I take it back, when I go to get it they now say something is going in the transfer case and estimate $2600 plus another $50 for the diagnostics.

The kicker is last mouth was my last payment $%^*&(well I guess maybe not now)

26 years of owning GMC 4x4s and I'm have thoughts

What would you guys do? any good advice?

Mark, did you drive it with a bad slip yoke for a lot of miles? If you had a slip yoke problem causing extra drivetrain vibration, it's conceivable that you destroyed the bearings on the transfer case...but it's also possible your dealership misdiagnosed the problem. Ask to talk to the mechanic that did the first diagnosis, and then ask to talk to the mechanic that did the 2nd diagnosis. The service manager should let you do that.

You have a low reaction carrier bad in your trans. You need to take care of this ASAP. You are just getting more metal throughout the system. At 42K it can be goodwilled warranty. They should do this because of the past history.

I noticed the sound and they looked at it in about a week. This isn't my work truck it mostly sits, maybe 100kms or 60 miles.

I asked for the yoke because of the low kms and it doesn't look worn to me. I've changed well used yokes where the top of the splines were pointed this one looks new there isn't even a mark where the splined shaft normally stops.

I have bought trucks and cars from this dealer and will try to maintain a working relationship

Please believe me, do not let them sell you a transfer case. If the noise goes away as soon as it shifts out of first it is a low reaction carrier in the trans. Its not real common but I have seen it several times over the years. I have seen rear differentials rebuilt because the tech just drove it around the building and it never shifted out of first. If they refuse to listen to you, please take it for a second opinion. I'm just trying to save you some money.

Should I take it to a transmission shop for a second opinion?

Just a thought.

I would suggest another GM dealer. Maybe no one at the dealer you are going to has had this problem. If there is not a dealer close I guess a trany shop will do. If they agree you still might want to have a GM reman put in. 5 year 50K warranty.
