I am trying to find my vent solenoid thingy for my 2000 silverado. I can't find it. I have a haynes manual that shows it, but still no luck. I can find the canister fwd of the fuel tank, but nothing else. Any help? I am trying to track doen a P0440 code, and have replaced tha gas cap and it's tight. I want to inspect the vent solenoid for possibel crap under the valve?

THis is what GM manual says...

The powertrain control module (PCM) tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for the following conditions:

* Large and small leaks

* Excess vacuum

* Purge flow during non-commanded conditions

* Fuel level and fuel pressure sensor faults

* EVAP purge and vent valve faults

The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor in order to determine the level of vacuum or pressure in the EVAP system. The PCM commands both the EVAP purge solenoid and the EVAP vent valve ON when the Conditions for Running the DTC are met in order to apply an engine vacuum to the EVAP system. The PCM commands the EVAP purge solenoid OFF once the system has reached a predetermined level of vacuum. This test confirms if a vacuum can be achieved in the EVAP system. Failure to develop a vacuum may be caused by a large leak or a restriction. This DTC sets after twice failing the above test..

THey then go into a long test proceedure to find reason the P0440 code set.

Chuck you haynes manual and get a Factory Service Manual and get the correct info on your truck. It tells you where the component is and all the correct info. The rest are junk.

You can find them here.

I have computerbased officail GM manual here that is over 7 gig in size and it has several pages on troubleshooting a P0440. My above post was just a snipet from it.

Well, I found the vent solenoid. I dropped the canister and looked at it and all the lines as far as I could tell they all look ok. So, now it comes down to replacing the vent or purge units for about $18 each or the fuel tank press sensor at about $40 all from rock auto. I know it would be more than $80 for the dealer to troubleshoot it so I figured I'l start replacing parts. It's cheesy maintenance, I know, but will be cheaper in the long run. What do you guys think..vent valve first?

First look for carbon chunks in the solonoid thats keeping from sealing. Check your gas cap too, or even replace it.

I can give you the "officail" test proceedure (it is to long to post) if you PM me.

I had the same problem. Change the purge solenoid that is located on top of the engine first (it's the easiest to get to) then reset the puter and drive awhile. I bet that fixes it for you.
