Manual extending mirrors

Hey All -

My 05' came with the standard power mirrors (non-extending). I want to swap them out for the older style manually extending (non-power) mirrors. Is this a pretty simple switch? Do I have to take the door panel off? If I go from power mirrors to manual mirrors do I need to pull a fuse or at least put a wire nut on the now loose wires?

gmpartsdirect.com has these mirrors for $170 (sku # 12495931)

Thanks

Hey Moo,

Mirrors are easy to change, I put my CIPAs on in anout 15 mins. the door panel doesn't need to come off, only the little triangle-shaped trim piece on the inside of the door directly behind the mirror. It's held on by 3 trim clips, you just need to gently pop it off.

Once that trim piece is off, you'll see that the mirror has 3 studs that mount through the door with 10mm nuts. The connector for heat/power is a typical GM connector. Just pop the wire connector from the mirror leads, take off the 3 nuts and the mirror is off. Install is just the reverse. If not using the power feature, I would just put some tape over the end of the connector and leave it there in case you ever wanted to go back to the power mirrors.

Are those mirrors $170 each or for the pair? If each, you might consider the CIPAs, they are manual extend, but you get to keep the heat and power features. If pair, sounds like a good deal.

I could never have manual mirrors on my truck.....sweetie always adjusts them when she drives it. That was one feature I really liked about my old '00 Expedition, the mirrors reset along with the seat when you use the driver memory function.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news,But for the '03-up trucks you DO need to remove the door panels in order to disconnect the mirrors from the switch.

The '99-'02 trucks you didn't need to remove the door panels.

So there's no more connector at the mirror? Hard to believe the wire runs directly from the mirror to the switch. What about the passenger side? No switch there.

Still not a big deal, I took my door panels off to replace the speakers last year.

Yea,Even on the passenger side it goes down to the power window/lock switch.

2 less connectors = $.20 more profit on the vehicle I guess.........

DANG IT!

And here I was all excited at the thought of NOT having to take the door panels off. Oh well. BTW - that $170 is for 'both' mirrors. Not bad.

Nice thing about having the manual tranny - My wife CAN'T drive my truck !

Moo, sorry about the incorrect info, mine is an '01 and thought yours would be the same since the body style is the same up to '06.

I just removed my two front door panels last night on my 06 SLT to swap from the power folding mirrors to the new style camper / towing mirrors. You need a 10 mm socket for the screw behind the door lock, pry out from the back of the black housing, I used a pocket knife to get it out. Unscrew the 10mm screw behind the arm rest, unscrew the 10mm srew under the door panel. there are two plugs door panel colored at each end of the door. The front plug is plastic and will pull out with the door panel, the rear plug is actually a long screw. Pop off the rear plug cover with your fingers then unsrew with a vortex screw driver. You should also remove the bezel around the door handle. This will come out by hand by gently pulling. The door panel should lift off at this point but will be restricted by the wiring. I layed down on the garage floor with a flashlight and started unplugging wires at that time. The power mirrors are held in place at three locations on the inner door panel. You will have to move out of the way some clear plastic that is adhered to the door panel and the mirror wiring can be removed. After you do the drivers side the passenger side will be a breeze. This took me 30 minutes to do and I didn't break a thing. The new mirrors I got were plug and play despite what my salesman told me. Good luck and hope this helps.

I need to reclarify something here. You will also need a 9/32 socket. This will be for the screws (3) you will find on the door panel. The 10mm will be for the 3 nuts attaching the mirror to the door behind the triangle piece of plastic trim. Sorry about that.
