2006 Silverado Vibration

Hello All,

I recently bought a 06 silverado ECSB with the 5.3 it has about 1300 miles on it now. Yesterday while on our way to our local Wal Mart the truck started to shake really bad. This only happened at about 65 mph or below. Anything over 70 the truck was fine. Wondering if this is a simple fix or if i need to go back to the dealer already. :) Thanks in advance

If this is a 2WD model with General tires on it, most likely one of the tires has a broken belt in it. These are terrible tires and you will be well advised to invest in a good set of Micheline LTX tires. Yes, even on a new truck. If you go back tot he dealer, they will put another crappy General tire on it (if they figure out which is bad. To do that, you need to have them tested on a road force balancer, such as Hunter model 9700. This machine will measure the force variation while the tire is loaded and rotating and it will flag a defective tire with excessive road force variation.)

Somebody on this board actually posted pictures of General tires on his truck with about 3k miles. Chunks of the thread were missing.

mine does the same thing at 45 MPH. I have less than 500 miles on mine. My first thought is the General tires.

Bad thing/good thing is, it doesnt do it all the time. If I am on a crappy road it seems to do ok. If I am on a smooth road, then it really shakes.

yeah its 2wd, I find it kinda sad that i bought the truck with 89 miles on the clock and i already may need a tire replaced. :chevy: if thats not bad enough i havent even got to drive it yet (i have CP and use a wheelchair) the hand controls are almost finished (waiting for my father to do some fine tune work. In the mean time my mother sure enjoys the new car smell. LOL oh well at least they cant give me the "you just bought it and you broke it already lecture :D

Bad thing is GM will not replace them unless they are .040 out of round or worse.

General JUNK is what I call em'! :)

Just something to think about......

Out of round...... Starts from 0 mph and get worse the faster you go. If the tire is badly out of round you will feel the truck "hop" at very low speeds on flat smooth pavement. VERY noticable with a broken belt.

Balance problem generally only vibrates at a given speed, say 45 or 65. Usually not before not after, but you could have one that vibrates at 45 and another that vibrates at 70 and so on. If left unbalanced the tire will eventually become out of round due to the tire skipping on the road surface.

A tire, when mounted sometimes doesn't fully seat until its driven for a while. This can effect its balance and shape.

And it is possible that its just thrown a weight.

I took it to the dealer, They said they balanced the tires. Then the guy in the service dept and the salesman that sold it to me test drove it and said it was "good to go". As my mother was driving it home (b/c i still cant drive it) to me it felt the same. I think i am just going to have to get that set of terds they call tires off and get a decent set and call it a day.

Just because they "balanced" the tires does not mean they did it right. I never would have believed that it is possible to chronically balance the tires wrong, until I witnessed it myself. My coworker has a 99 dodge Durango 4X4 with 31x10.5R15 tires. He had vibration problems with Michelin LTX M/S tires, which developed after about 20k miles after he got the tires. Looked like they just needed rebalancing. Yes, that was all that was wrong, but he took it to a local Dodge dealer and they balanced the tires wrong twice! The truck ran even worse than before. Fianally, he had the tires balanced on Hunter 9700 road force balancer, and two rear tires were out 3/4 ounces on each side! After correct rebalance, no more problems.

Note: I had Michelin LTX M/S tires on my 95 Nissan pickup. Got over 75K miles from one set and the tires still had thread left. No problems whatsoever. These are just about the best tires you can get for your truck or SUV.

So I went back to the dealer and they told me that theres nothing wrong with the truck. After I was there for 5 hrs. So the service mgr comes out and test drives it with my mother and myself, and he feels the vibration. So they let some air out of my tires and balanced them again. It made it better but it was still quite rough riding. I understand that this is a truck and that its not going to ride like a high end sedan, but this was no where near as smooth as it was when i bought it. So i said to the guy its still there. He says "I cant do anything for you thats the nature of the beast" So i said ok then you can have the truck back b/c i know for a fact this isnt right and if you cant or wont fix it then i want my money back. So he comes back and says "I am gonna make some calls and see if i can replace those general tires with goodyears for ya " Come back Wed. So thats where i stand

That was me. Check out this thread for the entire story of what happened.

Don't let the dealer get away with not replacing the tires. I had two dealers try to tell me that the tires are not covered by the bumper to bumper warranty, but they are.

I basically told the dealer that they need to replace the tires, and if they put the same POS General tires on the truck again, I'd be back every two months demanding a new set until my warranty ran out. They eventually put on a set of proper truck tires, for the price it would have cost to upgrade to the truck tires when I first bought it ($180). The dealer will fight you on this, but don't give up. It took me nearly 2 hours of arguing with the service manager, and the president of the dealership before they finally gave in.

:D i will fight them tooth and nail, thats for sure. and thanks for the link.

I am all but at the end of my rope here, I am still fighting this issue. I even took the truck to a tire dealer and had the truck put the speed balancer and i discovered that ALL 4 TIRES ARE EGG SHAPED. I made sure to get this in writing. My father faxed it to the dealer i bought the truck from. They assured me that the GM rep would call me and the problem was as good as fixed. That was a week and a half ago. Now when we call the dealer they tell me that b/c they are a GMC dealer and not a chevy dealer the rep wont come. (correct me if i am wrong here, ladies and gents, but are they not both GM products) Why in gods name should the :) on the grill make it any different just b/c :D is on the sign. This is the dealer I bought the truck by the way. So again I call GM and they tell me that the complaint that i opened before was closed b/c the dealer says there is no vibration and that there is nothing wrong with the tires. They said that it does not matter what the tire dealer says they take the word of the dealer every time b/c they are the trained reps og GM. It really burns me up b/c i am making payments and insurance on something I can't drive. I am bound to a wheelchair for life and with the unsafe tires on the truck I am afraid to drive it in fear of a blow out or accident or both. Can anybody offer me advice on what to do next b/c I am lost :chevy:

This isn't tire related but when the abs recall went out.............for some reason my 2000 silverado didn't qualify for the fix(they ran the vin and said it wasn't part of the recal)......even though the abs was activating constantly at low speeds..............well I thought that was complete bullchit and I emailed GM customer service...........I basically told them that my truck was within the years of the recall, it has the exact symtoms and if I get into an accident because of the abs activating on dry pavement, that I was going to sue, the dealer that refused to fix it, the service manager at that dealer and GM..................well not 24hrs later I got a call from GM and they told me to bring it in to the dealer to get it fixed.

I don't know why some(mostly all) dealerships are such a$$holes to deal with.

Anyways..........you might want to contact GM and let them know you will sue them if you get into an accident because of tire failure.

Good luck..............

Try having them rotate the worse ones 90 degrees on the rim and put the best two on the front. That's the ONLY way those General Junks would work on my wife's 04 Sierra. Since they have about 30K on em' now...they're better.

If they don't want to work with you....walk away.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
