99 2wd Silverado Breaks

Recommended Posts

Every time i let off the brakes on my silvy from a dead stop, there's a thud...like the breaks are hanging up a bit in the back.

Anybody have this problem? Anyone have any ideas?

My bet is your slip yoke needs lubed. Drop your drive shaft, after chocking the wheels, and lube the part that goes into the transmission. I was told any kind of heavy grease will work.

It's really not that hard. Only 4 little bolts hold the rear of the drive shaft to the differential yoke. The reason for chocking the wheels is because the transmission won't be holding the truck stationary with the drive shaft disconnected. Lower the drive shaft down with out banging it up too much, stick your fingers in some grease and smear it all over the part that goes into the transmission, put it back together and have beer.

Should only take about 30min, getting all the stuff out and putting it back up.

Well, i dunno if this helps, but if i slowly pump the brakes to a stop, it doesnt happen. If it press them hard to stop, i let off, and about a second later you hear a "thud"

Ive never done this before, so my confidence is in the toilet. I'll give it a try though.

Am i reading that you pull the yoke right out of the tranny after you've disconnected the drive shaft?

Yes, you are reading it right.

What I noticed is that it was making the noise as the rear would settle or squat back down. When you stop hard the front goes down and the rear goes up, which pulls the driveshaft ever so slightly out of the transmission. When you take back off the front goes up and the rear goes back down, which pushes the driveshaft back in ever so slightly, as it slides in, it makes a squak/ lurching / thud noise. If you ease or coast to a stop the the rear will never raise and lower, thus the driveshaft does not move in and out, wiith no resulting noise.

What you could try is loading 500lbs into the rear of the bed, squatting the truck, this will push the drive shaft in and keep it there, the noise should change in some fashion, become more common or go away. I had 2 trucks and both behaved differently, one made the noise unloaded but not loaded. The other was the opposite, it made the noise only when it was loaded but not empty.

If you are too nervous about pulling the shaft, you might be able to get a couple of buddies to bounce the rear up and down (jumping on the bumper is always fun) while you lay under there soaking the yoke with WD-40 as it slides in and out, it probably won't last as long but it *might* be just enough to shut it up.

DO NOT USE REGULAR GREESE!!!!!!!

You need to use a transmission assembly lube to greese the shaft. The shaft is inserted into the tranny and the fluid circulates past the shaft washing anything that is on the shaft into the fluid. Regular Greese is not a good thing to have in the fluid. Just mt opnion.

This sounds like rear leaf spring wrap-up. Greasing the yoke is easy but probably is not the problem. there are many posts here about the spring cushions between leaves that fall off and need to be repalced.

I have chased this problem many times and it is always the rear leaf springs.

That's what I figured but the tech I asked at the dealership about this suggested using regular grease due to the price of GM's special lube... He may have been a retard, what ended up fixing mine was new t-case fluid.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
