2007/8 Silverado Big Block?

Recommended Posts

Considering all I'm hearing about the huge jump in price of the upcoming Duramax to meet the new emission regulations, there has to be some interest in the big block. Well, maybe I'm the only one. Anyone heard any info at all on the big block option for 2007/8?

I heard the 8.1 will be toast on the GMT-900's since they don't offer them in the new 2500 Suburban

the big block get very poor gas milage. so it will probable be history in the near future.

My 8.1 gets about 12 mpg empty. Compared to my previous truck with the 6.0 at 15 mpg empty I wouldn't say that's much of a difference. Towing with the 8.1 drops down to 11 mpg. My old 6.0 would drop to around 7 mpg.

When I compare yearly average mpg between the two trucks (yes I keep a log of every fillup) my 8.1 actually gets better than my old 6.0. The big factor there though is I pretty much only use my truck when I need to haul something so the 6.0 was always working hard and getting crappy mileage.

Though the 8.1L is no longer available in the Suburban/Yukon XL and full size vans, from what I understand, it will still be available in the GMT-900 heavy duties and the Topkick/Kodiak big trucks.

Even though I still see no mention in any of the released GMT 900 info, I think I do have confirmation of the 8.1 in the new trucks. I was at my local GM dealer today picking up a Ram Jet 502 for my Blazer project (sorry just had to get that in, I'm a little excited about it!) and I asked them if they had heard anything yet. The parts and service director checked the computer and said he showed part numbers for the 8.1 engine in the 2007/8 GMT-900 program. So, with any luck, we'll see it and while it is wishful thinking, maybe a bump in HP and TQ too.

That's good news. I hope to buy a 3500 late next year with an 8.1L in it. I just don't drive my large pickups enough to justify a diesel, even at the prices they are going for now.

New here, but glad I found this thread. I have the same experience as trouttropper, I own both a 6.0 and an 8.1. with the difference of about 2mpg between them my wife and I fight to drive the 8.1L, not because of the mpg, but because it feels like an old muscle car, which we both love. I have driven a freinds dmax and it didn't impress me compared to the 8.1L. granted it's more powerful and a great engine in it's own right, but it's louder and I couldn't get used to the lack of engine braking. plus i'm only a part time tower of about 10K lbs, so i'd rather have the quieter engine for 340 days a year daily driver. plus, when towing the 8.1 is a pleasure compared to the 6.0. I need a new truck next year and was hoping to be able to get the 8,1L in it, now it appears I will be able to, yaaaahhhoooooo.

I'm also very anxious to find out the new HD engine lineup. I was leaning diesel but I expect it to be a $10k option with the new LMM Duramax and I'm not excited about all the new pollution controls. Besides that, diesel's about $.50/gallon higher then regular gas and reports suggest ULSD is making cost go even higher and MPG going lower.

I've heard that 8.1 is going away. I've also heard it may live on a few more years. I also heard that the 8.1 might be getting a power increase for '07. There have been rumors of a 8.3, a V10, and a supercharged 6.0.

Does anyone have any inside info on the new HD engine lineup. With production quickly approaching I can't believe the info is still so sketchy.

There was a report about 2 years ago that the V-10 had been dropped. I figure that's probably true, as there has been no news about an upcoming V-10 since.

I'll do my best to nail down an answer from the GM guys at the SEMA show in about a month. This month Truck Trends magazine has a blurb about it but it seems like they are guessing too.

Doesn't look good for the big block. If you want one, better order it now!!! The link to the press release below states that the engine choices for the new HD's will be the 6.0L or the Duramax. At least the diesel guys are getting 5 extra hp's for a few thousand more!!! It looks like the bean counters are going to force customers to drop close to 10K for the ability to pull a decent load with the new trucks. Tough times in the HD world for us GM guys.

Thanks for the update but I'm pretty pissed. I really wanted a new HD w/8.1.

I wonder if 8.1 is truly EOL or if GM is just downplaying it since they want to push Duramax's and 6.0's. (they didn't mention it but they didn't say it was discontinued either)

Hate to say this but I emailed one of the people at the end of the press release. She just replied and told me, no 8.1, just the 6.0 and the Duramax. See below.

Thanks for your inquiry Vern. The new heavy duty Silverado and Sierra will not have the 8.1L gas engine. They are standard with the 6.0L V8 - 353 hp and 373 lb-ft. Optional engine is Duramax Diesel - 365 hp and 660 lb-ft.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Fred's favourite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. To Fred's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. Fred was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
