front diff actuator stuck in 'engage' mode

Hey everyone,

 

My 2000 1500 Z71 front diff actuator is stuck 'on'........I just pulled it out and the spring loaded plunger thingy is out all the way. I can push it back in by hand but then it springs right back out.

 

What controls this?.........and Im assuming in 2wd this plunger should be 'in'.....not 'out'. Do I have to start the truck for it activate and suck itself back in??

 

Am I assuming correctly?
