I loooove my 3500 big block

Moving hay the last part of July. Temperatures were between 100 and 114 degrees in the afternoon. It sucked to say the least. We started at daylight (4 a.m.) and it was already 78 degrees.

We've got a 7 mile winding stretch of 14% grade road to get to the house. Max speed is about 20 mph because of all the curves. The 8.1 handled it with ease (even during the hot part of the day). It was all my old 6.0 could do to make it up the hill.

Total weight on this load was 18,240 lbs, minus 4 other passengers who weren't inside when I was on the scales so probably more like 18,800 lbs going up the hill.

The first bale felt around 10 lbs....12 tons later they were more like 230 lbs.

They were pretty light, around 55-60 lbs actually. There's about 1 1/4 tons on the truck and 2 1/4 tons in the trailer.

Anyone know if single wheel one ton is a standard or is it optional (with automatic) ?

Is single wheel, 3500, automatic with 8.1 usually in dealer inventory ?

Is there a post here with photos of 3500 single ?

Hey the srw is an option.. With that setup adn the 8.1 you are more then likely going to have to order it. At least in my area its rare to see a truck that doesnt have either the 6.0 or the Duramax. What you could would be to go over to GMs website and build your own truck to the specs. Then you can search the local dealer invintories from GMs site. As far as pics go there should be some also on GMs site. There really isnt a difference in looks between a 2500HD and a 3500 SRW. The 3500SRW comes wiht 265s for tires another leaf spring in the back and comes with the plain steel wheels. You can't get the fancy wheels on the 3500s. Also you can not get a 3500 in an extended cab short bed setup. Its either regular, extended or crew cab with the long bed.

How many trips did you make like that? How'd the trans do? Did it get hot?

3 trips total this year. The in-laws had a small horse trailer and an old blazer to help out a little.

Tranny handled it great. Allison gets an A+ in my book. The hottest it got was around 210 degrees. It actually was climbing in second gear most of the way at about 15 mph. I forced into first towards the top because the curves slowed me down to about 5 mph and it wouldn't downshift (I didn't have the gas pedal floored which is probably why it didn't want to).

As for the other questions.

A 3500 srw crew cab is rare

A 8.1 eninge is rare

A 8.1 with 4:10 axle is rare

Put them together and you come up with an extrememly hard to find truck. The dealership I went to did a western half U.S. search and found 2 available. Luckily one of them had the options I wanted.

The 3500 srw actually has 2 more springs than the 2500HD. One extra in the "pack" and the overload spring (nice having a 2500HD work truck sitting next to mine to compare ).
