Noisy valves & 99 Tahoe

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have about 93k on my 99 Tahoe, have had noisy valves since about 35k. I've tried new plugs, new wires, synthetic oil, various gas additives. Even used high octane fuel. Especially in the warm summer months when I go up hills or pull a trailer, I here the valves. I have an extended warranty on the truck, is there a specific test I can ask the GM dealer to do that will tell me the valves are bad. Last time at the dealer they put some additive in my gas tank, this didn't help. I plan on keeping the truck another 100k, but would like to resolve this valve issue before the ext warranty expires.

Thanks in advance,

Are you talking about detonation "pinging" or lifter noise?

If it is detonation, you eithe have a anti knock sensor issue or you need to have the top end decarboned with a good Motor Vac or BG system.

If it is lifter tap, you could have deeper issues. If it is due to sludge caused by improper maint or not so good motor oil, change the oil, leave out one qt and add a bottle of Rislone. If it is your lifters, and this does not correct it in a few hundred miles, you either can live with the tap or get out your wreches.

It is not a mechanic in a can, but is will almost always quiet noisy lifters.

I think its lifter tap. I'll try the Riselone first. If that doesn't quiet them down I'll try the GM dealer to have the valves adjusted.

Thanks for replies,
