4.3L V6 Engine VIN W,X

To anyone with same problem,

I own a 95 Chevy s-10 w/ 4.3L. I'm wondering if anyone has came across the same problem as I. Rattle noise or knock occurring in the 2000-2500rpm range, under a moderate to heavy load, with warmed-up engine. It sounds like upper end so I proceeded and replaced the lifters and the problem is still there. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly apprecieated.

my 93 had a cracked piston, same symtoms you describe.

 

it would disaapear if I shorted out the spark plug on the offending cylinder, that is how I figured out which cylinder had the problem.

 

after I took it apart I could see the source of the problem but before dissassembly I only knew it was something in one particular cylinder.

 

hopefully its something simpler on your truck, have you pulled th oil pan and checked the bearings?

No I didn't drop the oil pan yet. It sucks cause the front diff. is in the way. But I wodner if I had a spun cranck bearing if it would give me the same noise???

IF YOU SPUN A BEARING ENGINE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE LOCKED UP.

 

A LOOSE BEARING WILL MAKE NOISE

 

, GENERALLY A KNOCK OR A THUDDING SOUND.

 

THESE NOISES CAN BE ISOLATED BY DISCONNECTING SPARK PLUGS, ONE AT A TIME, ESPECIALLY IN REFERENCE TO ROD OR PISTON NOISES.

 

IS ENGINE RUNNING OK OTHER THAN THE NOISE?

 

TRY LISTENING TO IT WITH A STETHOSCOPE JUST TO PINPOINT THE AREA THE NOISE IS COMING FROM?

The motor runs fine. There is no miss or anything. Someone had mentioned to me there's something called a balancer shaft in these motors. And soemtimes they create a vibration and that can be the culprit. I noticed the shaft when I replaced the lifters & didn';t see no scoring or anything on the shaft. The play in the shaft seemed to minimal. Not sure where else to look. Like you said, pull of 1 spark plug at a time?? Don't know

I have this same rattle...sounds almost like a Diesil knock, or a "clank"

 

Cracked flywheel...is a term ive heard a few times...dont really know why that would create a "clatter"

theres a lot of things that cause noise.

 

mine ran fine with the cracked piston. mine dont have the balance shaft .

 

like somebody else sed, flywheel cracked. yep that can cause it.

 

bad motor mounts. bad harmonic balancer etc...
