I just paid $800 for a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Here's the stats-

116K, totally loaded with every option including leather seats, no rust, 4.0L, auto w/overdrive, vent visors, motor purrs and is hella strong, etc., etc.

Problems-

strange electrical problem concerning trans/overdrive, just for the hell of it I'll assume it needs a new trans, although is probably electrical

possible rear main seal leak

needs tires and alignment

receipt in glovebox from 2002 says new head, head gasket, freeze plugs, thermostat. Is this from overheating?

Thanks

Thats a pretty good price. My last Wrangler had that motor its pretty decent, funny after driving it for 4 1/2 years the rear main started leaking also. For 800 thats a good deal. And yeah it sounds like it was overheated, but at least it was fixed 3 years ago.....not last week! Enjoy!

Around here, anything that will move on it's own power is worth $1k. You did just fine.

I have seen that 4.0 go for well over 200k miles. It is a great engine. For help and a good room full of people like this one, check out jeepforum.com

It is very busy though, but a lot of experienced Jeepers who know how to diagnose and fix things.

Best of luck with it!

Thanks gentlemen.

I changed the oil this morning and it is definately the rear main seal, I don't even know if I'll bother fixing it.

I also forgot to mention it is only two wheel drive. Maybe I'll throw up some pictures later.

As for the trans/overdrive, have you tested the OD switch on the dash, or, does it not do anything at all? You can easily remove the switch, and test the Jeep with the switch unplugged. Does it not engaged OD, or, is it shifting in and out of OD?

Rear main seals are not uncommon, if they did replace the top end of the engine, then there is a chance that they didn't need to touch the rear main seal. You can replace the head on a motor without removing it from the Jeep. More than likely, they overheated the engine, if they had to replace the head. This engine shares much of its design with the 4.2 that started in the CJ. Also, check for cracks on your exhaust manifold, it's common.

From your other pictures, you did get a 2WD Jeep. It looks nice. Did it get some electrical work done to it? Your kick panel is missing on the passenger side.

If there are any recalls outstanding on the Jeep, you can get them taken care of at any dealership. They cover the vehicle, no matter who owns it, or, how many miles are on it.

One thing that I would check, is the fluid in the rear Dana 35. With that many miles, you should just check the fluid, and the condition of the R/P as well. On my 98 GC, I had to replace the R/P at about 70k miles.

He had it sitting out by the road for sale for two months with a tag on it for $1000, but I've got some work to do on it first. If you look closely in the second picture at the front tire you can just make out the strip of steel poking out of the tire. Needs an alighnment bad. I believe I've figured out the tranny issue also and should be able to fix it myself for around $200. Also both roof racks are broken and stuck in place. Pretty good little winter beater though.

I think the problem is in the tranny, a pressure regulator/sensor combo thing from what I've read online and at the jeepforums and from the codes I got out of it.

I didn't know I could get recall work done on it, thats good to know.

I was wondering about the kick panel, whether there was supposed to be one or not. Where'd you see that pic?

What is a R/P?

I saw the kick panel when I looked up the host of your pictures. I changed the picture number by 1, and saw the interior pic.. ;) Which also showed me the missing 4WD shifter in the center console.

Yes, the ring and pinion of the rear axle can go, it's always good to at least check that out. With mine, the Dana 35 would hum on the highway, when I was decelerating.

Best of luck, there are a ton of parts out there for the early ZJ, if you are to do any work on it. It was the number one stolen vehicle for a reason; there were a ton of these on the road.
