2000 Silverado clunk..not shaft or slip yoke

I Have a clunking noise after I back my 2000 Silverado up and then go forward and try and turn. It only happens once. And the distance can vary between 20 feet and a half mile. It doesn't happen every time, but is getting more often. My wife who was standing outside my truck in the driveway today said it sounded like it was coming from between the rear wheels. People in the passenger seat have said it is definately coming from the back, and it sounds to me like its coming from the left front wheel. My truck has 100k miles on it and it makes absolutely no noise when turning or shifting while going down the road, so I don't think the steering shaft clunk (can't feel it in the wheel), or the slip yoke clunk, (it's never made a noise while shifting). It only happens after backing up out of a parking lot etc, and then going forward and turning. It's definately a metal on metal clunk, like something heavy. Any ideas?

Yeah, it sounds similar to what I have going on in my 2000. I have the two piece drive shaft and it has some play in it that worked its way in over time. I don't think its really something to worry about.

I had the same problem with the 2 piece drive shaft, mine was a combination of the carrier bearing being ground out and excessive play in the u-joint. Replaced both, fixed the clunk. You'r u-joint is probably going out. It will get worse if it is.

I lied two years ago. I actually have the one piece aluminum shaft.

God damnit, f*cking old threads got me again.

Old threads should be moved to the archives.

Especially when the OP never comes back to give a resolution.
