Door lock issues

99 Chevy 5.3 4x4. New to me truck. Both doors have a lock isues. On the drivers door after you push the unlock button you have to push the slider to get it to unlock. When unlocking it with the key I have to turn the key all the way and then hold it there while I open the door. The passenger side will not lock at all from inside or outside. The doors lock ( not the passenger but I hear it try) when I hit like 10 mph. Are they supposed to unlock after I stop and put it in park? How hard are the doors to take apart and what would I need to look for while I am in there? Thanks

Well, I've yet to have to tear into a 99+ truck door, but I've done mid 90's and older model GM cars and trucks. I would assume they haven't changed the basic design. Just got done replacing the power lock part on my '95 Lumina last week.

Taking the door apart isn't that tough, just go slow and be gentle (in a forceful sort of way if that makes sense). There should be some screws where you grab to close the door. Other than that they are usually just held in by those stupid spring clips along the edge. Just gotta pry them off (that's where the gentle/forceful thing comes in to play). I'm assuming you have power windows as well. If manual windows you gotta take the handle off. Just gotta go slow and pay attention to how things go together. Might have to unplug some wires along the way.

The latch/locking mechanism/power lock mechanism is kinda a 2 in 1 unit. It generally comes out of the door as one piece but then you can separate the power locking part from the actual latch. There should be some long thin metal rods going from the "unit" to the inside door handle and inside door lock slider. There will be a somewhat hidden shorter rod leading to the outside door handle.

Sounds to me like some of the rods are bent or jammed somehow. It's pretty easy to understand how it all works once the door is apart and you can see the parts.

Of course this is all assuming they didn't change the design on me

Thanks. I will tear into them this weekend. Another thing it is doing is that the drivers door locks everytime I close it. I have to use the key to ghet back in. Kind of a pain cause I can't leave the truck running when I run into the store to get coffee or anything. I put a hide-a-key under the truck just in case I have to get out and the door closes behind me. Very annoying. Do you think the remote unlock would evn work on the truck right now? It came with the option but I don't have the fobs for it.

I'm having to use the switch to unlock my doors every time I get out of the truck. The doors lock automatically when the truck starts moving but they will not unlock when I want to get out.

Is there a way to set this up to unlock the doors when I remove the keys or something.

I just bought this truck and it did not come with an owners manual

Thanks for any help.
