2000 Sierra 1500 - Tach & Tranny

Recently acquired 2000 Sierra 1500, 5.8L, Auto, 90K miles

Tach - RPMs never read above 2400. What is the "normal" RPM range for this truck?

Truck runs fine on the highway, 1200 mile trip and averaged 19MPG highway. When driving at 45 MPH in town, light throttle, truck seems to have a small hunt. I don't really see a change on the tach but I can feel it and hear it. Looking for suggestions on where to start checking.

TIA

If you have a 2000 you should have a 5.3 V8 (New body style) The redline for that engine is about 6K. Now you say the Tach never reads above 2400... like you rev it in park and the gauge wont move past 2400. I’m assuming that engine is reving past 2400?

kheiney, Your correct, it;s the 5.3L.

The tack will go above 2400 if I rev it in Park. I should of stated that it never goes above 2400 RPM when driving. Tranny seems to shift around 1700-1800 rpm.

I've been driving import 4 cly for so long, it seems abnormal to be at such a low RPM range.

Thats some really low shift points for normal driving. I can get mine to shift like that but only when I'm really easy on the gas. But even when I'm only 1/2 on the the gas 1st gear will rev to about 3k before shifting. So if you mash the gas on a green light does the engine ever rev up?
