New beater truck!

Well, I finally broke down and bought a truck for errands, hauling stuff, etc. I didn't have too much cash in hand, so a 99+ truck was out. I always liked this body style, so I now own this 93.

I worked at a Chevy dealership as a teenager, but I don't remember many of this particular set up being sold, at least not when I worked there in 1989 or 1990. It is the 4.3 V6 5 speed set up, yet it is a Silverado with power windows and door locks, nicer seat and door panels, etc. I hadn't seen a V6 5 speed with the highest level trim package before.

I don't have any decent pics yet, it is raining out now, so I took a quick shot out the window of my house.

Runs great....now the minor fixes begin!

Edited to add: In this picture, it doesn't look like a beater because you can't see all its flaws, but it has many, especially on the driver's side!

calling that a beater is an insult to those who drive trucks that dont look that good and are older, but i still love mine

Well, it is one of those that looks good from a distance....when you get closer it looks more like a beater! I call it that because it needs some work and it has almost 200K on the odometer....but it sure runs good.

im not really offended, but yeah make it the new project truck. how much did u get that for?

Good looking truck!! I've always liked that body style.

My wife even commented when I bought my '07 Classic that it would never look as good as the 88-98 body style.

Can you take some interior shots too?

After a few minor repairs I'll have about $2300 in it; it has a brand new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. No rust (other than a minor surface patch here and there) A/C & heat works, and it has a Sony CD player, so not too bad for the $ I guess.

I was hoping I could get a truck for working on the rentals and hauling around the four wheeler cheap; it was an added benefit that it looks pretty decent too.

As far as upgrades, I'll probably tint the windows first so the interior doesn't go any further downhill in the Oklahoma sun.

Thanks...

Here are a few; pics aren't that great but you get the idea. I'll leave off the pics of the exterior dents and dings for now!

Beater?

Jesus Christ that think is f**king showroom.

Wanna sell it to me?  :seeya:

I'm sure he would for a "showroom" price :D

That's about exactly what I'm looking for. Not having a pickup for the first time pretty much since I started driving has been driving me nutso. I just need me a beater to haul the quad and make trips to Home Depot.

Trips to Home Depot among other things is why I got my truck, but I had no choice to get brand new.

I'd LOVE to find a truck like this one though.

Thanks for the compliments.

I am mostly showing the better parts of the truck, what you don't see yet is that the dash is cracked, seats and carpets have stains that probably aren't coming out no matter what I try, and the windshield is cracked pretty good (no leaks though). Plenty of dents too, although most are smaller.

Steering is a little sloppy, but not too bad. Speakers play, but are shot. Driver's door isn't original and it needs new front shocks. Power window on driver's side is a little slow and the power locks only work on the second try. Door panels and some of the hardware is pretty loose, but some of that can be corrected.

Wipers don't work, but I have already got some advice on fixing that on the pre-99 section on this board.

But it does have a lot going for it....a good full sized spare, factory alloys are in good shape and I am amazed at how much power a 4.3 V6 has (keep in mind this is not the 200hp version) when you mate it with a 5 speed. The engine was also rebuilt a few years ago, so that doesn't hurt.

I was happy to see the cruise control and all the gauges work too....oil pressure is good.

I'll keep updating as I find stuff, it is fun to share a find like this. Most shortbeds this body style (and older) don't seem to be in mostly 'stock form' any more.

Up for sale soon as it looks like twins are on the way! I'll post in the For Sale section pretty soon. It now has new Sony speakers and a new sliding rear glass.

    • Most online suppliers and Amazon. All have noted "not for use with Bose speakers".
    • Very interesting thread. Definitely didn’t expect to see this kind of mileage out of that engine.
    • Just did an injector/HPFP replacement on Pepper at 192,400 miles; close enough to 200K, RIGHT? (If 200K is considered life end and to me it isn't). But hey, to each his own.    Have never run a catch can on this vehicle. Back side of every valve looked like a new valve spray painted semigloss black. Port walls looked 'neat' (all a normal result of passive EGR via VVT) Zero build up even in AFM cylinders. Just color. It uses no measurable oil and never has.    At 155,000 I put her on E-85 and a borescope of the cylinders at plug change showed very clean pistons and valve faces. The replaced injector tips looked new. (It was the pump piston seal that was leaking). Oh well, have six good backups.    Still gets 28 mpg on gas (highway average) and over 20 (highway) on alky. UOA's look good and runs as good now as it did when I bought it. Better in fact.    What improvement would a Catch Can provide this motor?     And given all this I expect that IF I installed one I'd see some water/gas/oil vapor accumulation. Byproducts of normal combustion.   Having said that, IF my motor used an appreciable amount of oil I'd consider it a useful 'crutch' until I had the situation corrected OR if bore polished, until I junked it or rebuilt it to stave off repeated plug fouling.    I'm not telling you what I THINK. But what its DONE.
    • Love the look. I'm a SCSB lover myself.    Two items. 1.) A spacer changes scrub radius but this also changes when we use wheels of different offsets. A little isn't a big deal. 2.) Steel wheels, alloy wheels all have different thickness. Same effect on the stud and lug nut as a spacer. When hub centric the wheel isn't supported by the stud. It's supported by the hub. The stud just keeps it all together.
    • I had a evap sol go bad a couple weeks ago. . I replaced it.  While watching live data at the time I saw I had some cylinder 1 misfires. No MIL but on live data I could see ~50 at startup and about 70 more after an hour a drive all on cyl 1.  I also noticed that the LTFT were -5% to -15% always.  And that bank 2 is always -3% richer than bank 1. Even across all driving modes, city, highway, etc it’s always 3% richer than bank 1. So I start with the misfire. Swapped coil, plug, and plug wires from 1 to 3. No follow. I got an Injector reseal kit, pulled the D/s injector rail, swapped #1 and #3 injectors, resealed them, reinstalled and retested.  The misfire followed to 3. So I ordered and replaced all 8 injectors, spark plugs, and plug wires. Also replaced the 1 time use fuel pipes under the intake manifold.  Injectors that were in the truck since new were  Part # 12668390.  I replaced them with # 12742701 Got from RockAuto. Pretty certain they’re genuine and the correct ones. I called a friend at a parts store who told me “the 12742701 were the correct superseded part # for the originals I was replacing”. So started truck after replacing all that and it’s running -15 - -30 LTFTs. I reset the fuel trims with GDS2 and drove it for a 60 miles trip each way. There have been no changes in the LTFTs.  I checked if the HPFP was leaking into the crankcase. I removed the pvc and watched the trims. No difference.  I checked the alcohol content and it was at 10%  I’m out of ideas here. Truck seems to run great. Just always rich on the fuel trims.  Anyone with any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I ran an injector balance test just for the heck of it and it came back this. I’m confused.  I have gds2 and some other diag tools if anyone knows of anything I should test next.
