Increasing Towing Capacity - 2500 Sub

I have a '98 3/4 ton GMC Suburban with the big block. The manual states that the truck has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. I've spoken with a local trailer dealer, who has a Class V hitch that will fit it. He tells me that with the new hitch, the truck will be capable of towing 12,000 pounds, and can tow up to 14,000 pounds with an equalizer - all without doing anything more to the truck, which is stock, other than installing the new hitch. Is this accurate? Will the brakes & drivetrain hold up to the load? It has the towing "package" so tranny cooler & trailer brakes are installed on the truck already. I'd love to increase the towing capacity of the truck with just a new hitch, but I don't want to overload the thing & create a dangerous situation on the roads.

Just putting on a larger hitch won't increase the towing capibilities on your truck. The suspension, brakes, engine, tranny all come into play.

Basically, it doesn't change the GVWR on your truck.

Fair enough. The transmission, engine, axles & transfer case are no different from 3/4 ton Sub to 1 ton Pickup. The tranny cooler, brake calipers, pads, shoes, drums, even the Hydroboost are the same part numbers on my 3/4 ton Sub as the 1 ton pickup; only difference I've found is the Master cylinder. So, if I put a 1 ton Master cylinder on there, and 1 ton rear springs (just a helper from the looks of it), what keeps it from being a 1 ton Suburban? I'm not trying to argue this point, I just want to understand it.

I see where you're going...but basically, what's the GVWR listed on the drivers door ? That will not change, and regardless of how much extra things you put on the truck, from a legal point of view, that's all the truck is certified to tow.

Now in the real world, can you tow more....perhaps. It's really your choice I guess.

I conceed that whatever I do to the truck will not change the sticker on the door, nor the statement in the manual that the vehicle was certified at 10,000 pounds, and therfore legally that is what the truck is maxed at. I am curious, however, if the realistic working limit would increase by making the components match those of a truck with a higher limit - aka installing 1 ton parts where needed.
