i have a 2000 silverado 1500 z71 4x4 ext cab and when the truck is in 2wd the front drive shaft turns ( the truck is off the ground)should this be happening?

Yes it will turn while in 2wd, with the truck on the ground in 2wd. If you can turn the shaft by hand then there is no problem.

My question is how does it work? I have a 98 z71. Like you said on the ground I can turn the front drive shaft by hand no problem. When you push the button in mine or pull the lever in my brother in laws truck, is there a delay from locking the front diff to locking the transfer case?

Both of my brother in laws are mechanics and are not sure exactly how it works.

I told them it has to lock the front diff first to get the drive shaft up to speed then lock the transfer case.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

GM in 2000 -2002 changed the transfer case set up so that the drive shaft was always locked in. Stupid idea. That is one reason I traded off my 2002 Burb and got a 2005. No reason to have extra parts spinning. Prior to 2000 and 2003 on, you should be able to turn the shaft while in 2 wheel drive. As for it engaging there is some delay because the the soloniod has to heat up.

The tcases ahould engage using an electromagnetic clutch and solenoid system. Thats why on some the shaft spins and some are locked. Depends on the design and where the clutch is placed in the system.
