2008 Smart Fortwo

What does everyone think of this new small car yet to come?

 

When I was in Germany, many of these were around towns...and even on the Autobahn! Yes, the Autobahn! They were extremely popular town cars.

 

Here is what it will look like for the 08 model:

 

Here is what it looked like when it came out in 1999/2000 and up:

 

The engine is a 1 liter 3 cylinder putting about 84 Horsepower and it is a rear engine placement. Getting about 50 miles to the Gallon in a Gasoline powerplant.

 

Smart's entrance to US sales will start with the Smart ForTwo first, then they plant to launch a small SUV called the Smart ForMore here in the US later.

 

They had the Smart ForFour (4/5 seater 4-door), but unfortunatly it didn't get up to expectations and they cut the line off...They had a Smart Roadster/Coupe (their 'Sports car') and it didn't sell well. It was an awsome car. I have never ridden in any Smart car, but I can tell you, they are roomy whenever I looked in Showrooms nearby.

 

Starting price for the ForTwo will be less than 15,000 dollars, probably closer to 11,000 or so.

 

I really hope to see how this will do, Smart is such a unique brand that it has to do well here.

 

Before any of you think that no-one will survive a front end collision, think twice. Smart has built a Tridion cell (It will either be black or grey) and it is built to withstand some of the worst collisions.

Only 50MPG? Seems like a car that size should be able to do better. I'll wait for the Volt if I want a super efficient car.

I gotta find that information again and clarify it, because that came from memory from what I read lastnight. I can't recall everything exactly as I read it.

 

But that isn't the main point, it is about getting a regular 2-door car's interior room and fitting it into a much smaller car.

The smart cars have been around in Ontario for quite a while.

Here is one I say in a parking lot...had to go get a picture.

Even though they do well in colisions, what about the 'bounce' factor when a full size surburban hits you? ;)

Yeah, Smart has been in Europe and Canada, and their hoping that introducing the Fortwo to the USA will help a great deal.

nice thing is if it breaks down, you can pick it up and throw it in the back of a pick-up truck all jokes aside, there is a merging market for them little things the way fuel is getting. i just like being in something alittle larger

i'm sorry at 6'5" tall i would look like a sardine in that thing.

 

One problem with them though:

 

 

Those Draiage channels can be a bear

Why would one park it in a Draiage channel?

 

If you looked inside, and actually had a seat in the thing, any tall person would fit in there (except for mayb 7 ft tall people).

 

It accomadates most sizes of people.

These things were everywhere when I was in Italy last summer. Any tall person would not fit in there. I had the displeasure of traveling in one of those in Rome and I would not want to do it again. That being said, I'm about 6'3" 250, and I need a shoe horn to fit in several current domestic vehicles.

I'd feel safer on my motorcycle. At least in an accident, I'd be thrown clear. As opposed to being squished inside a crumpled coke can with no way out.

Although the Smart ForTwo car has it's flaws, lets hope it's small SUV counterpart has better luck.

Now the Brabus (somewhat like the Chevy SS vehicles, Chrysler SRT vehicles, and Ford SVT vehicles.) with a more powerful engine, it might be able to do 100 or 110.

I can see one of those things doing a barrel roll at 80 mph!

 

Do they make a 4x4 version? Maybe Superlift will have a real nice aftermarket lift system? I can see one rolling on 35's now! LOL
