Anybody ever try this? Just wondering about mpg gains in Chevy Trucks. I'm going to be trying it this week. I will report my findings. It is a procedure of adding acetone to your fuel for increased mpg. It helps vaporize fuel better for better efficiency. Calls for 3 ozs of pure acetone to 10 gallons of gasoline. I wonder if this will help our piston slap problems? If anyone has heard of, or tried this, please let me know. Interesting. I've read a lot of posts about this process and people are seeing 15-30 percent gains in mpg! Let me know what you guys think.

I tried it a few years back...it's been around awhile. For me (02 Chev Silverado 4x4), it did seem to indeed increase mpg...by a little. Maybe 5%, which is less than 1 mpg when averaging 17. What I decided was that the cost of the acetone was not worth the benefit. But, it may certainitly work better (or worse) in different vehicles. The good news was that it didn't kill the truck or anything.

Did it seem to make a difference in the way the truck ran? I was wondering if something like this would help with the carbon build up problem?

We tried this in my Advanced Auto Powertrain class. It doesn't help, at least not enough to be cost effective. Especially when a gallon of acetone is upwards of $5/gallon, and with 20 gallons you need something like 5 gallons of acetone.

Some of the resources say you only need a capful or two PER TANK for the acetone to increase the efficency of the burn....at that rate the gallon of acetone would last for easily over 20 tankfuls or more. I'm considering it...at this point 14mpg in my 6.0L LQ4 is a little rough compared to my L05 5.7L that was getting 17-18.

I'm just telling you what we had to add to make the change in gas mileage really noticable. If you add only a few ounces then you might increase your mileage by .00001 mpg. Hardly worth it in my opinion.

According to the reports that i've read, anything over 2-3 ozs per 10 gallons of gas will decrease mileage some. I will let you guys know what I find out, i'm probably trying it this week.

I don't know if you fellas ever watch MythBusters on Discovery Channel, but they actually tried acetone and found it did nothing to improve mileage. It was a great epidsode as they tested many of the "saving" methods written about on this forum including testing to see if a bedcover saves mileage. They were able to prove that it did not.

Bottom line was the only true was to ensure optimum mileage was tire pressure, proper maintenance and not using a lead foot. It was a great episode...they replay it every now and then.

I guess 14mpg is good for an LQ4? I was hoping for better but I know the 4.10's aren't helping at all.

I already went to Mobil 1, maybe that's why my economy is as "good" as it is. Now that my DIC is fully functional, I should be able to track economy a lot more closely.
