Can someone tell me how the pushbutton 4x4 is supposed to work. Yes

I know you push the button and it engages but exactly what happens? Is the a solenoid

or motor that does the job?

Depending on the year of your truck it is an electronic Actuator/Solenoid on your transfer case for the NBS trucks. I think on the OBS trucks there is an actuator on the Front Differential.
