That is the thread I have going right now with the problems i'm having out of my step-dad's 5.3. I understand that some valve tapping is normal on this engine, but what i've got it definitely a lifter issue. Is this similar to what you're experiencing?

 

I just changed the oil today to 5W30 and added a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil, and so far it has quieted down. The true test will come tomorrow morning.

How many miles? Mine taps a bit too, but i'm pretty sure it's just carbon build up. It's not too severe. I will be trying TEC tomorrow to see if that helps.

My 4.8L does some thing, no idea whats makes it do it.

Welcome to Vortec engines!.......I disliked the knock so much it made me buy a remote starter, so I dion't have to listen to it.

GM says it's normal....thus you don't have a lot of options other than to live with it.

Is nothing but the aluminum piston smacking the bore until it gets a lil heat in it and expands. Sounds worse than it really is

The 5.3' are known for piston slap, but make sure that you are running the reccomemded 5w30 also

I think gm sent out a bulletin about this. I don't think it's anything to worry about, just use 5w30.

my 2000 5300 has had a cold weather tick that goes away after about 1minute of running. Since it was maybe 2 years old. GM said normal live with it. The other day just for the heck of it I am poking around and still wondering why it does this, I grabbed the fan blade just to check the clutch. I know it can't be, but since I did that, it hasn't ticked. I have to add, this sound comes in after maybe 15 seconds from start up, so I don't think its lifter related.

What do you mean by "grabbing the fan blade"? Just checking free play or trying to stop it while idle-ing?

The big question to ask is who actually had an engine failure that was related to the piston slap? We've had it in our last 4 GM trucks with gas engines (05 Silvy, 98 Sierra, 01 Yukon XL, 98 Suburban) and never had a piston related problem (the 98's 5.7 bit the dust due to a failed oil pump and oil starvation during revving).
