Hopkins Trailer Brake Controller Wiring

O.K. first, when it comes to anything electrical I don't know anything...zip, zilch, zero, nada. That being said this may seem to be an elementary question but refer to first statement.

 

I have a 2005 2500 H.D. I am installing a Hopkins (Hoppy) brake controller. My dilema is that the harness that came with the truck has 5 wires, the controller has 4 and other than the ground I don't know which wires go to which so I'm hoping that someone can help me out.

 

The truck harness wiring tag says

DK BLU Trailer Brake Controller Switched Output

RED Fused Trailer Brake Controller Battery Feed

BLK Brake Controller Ground

LT BLU Vehicle Stop Lamp Switch to Brake Controller Input

BRN Brake Controller Illumination

 

The Controller says

White Ground

Blue Trailer electric brakes

Black Positive terminal on battery

Red Cold side of stop lam switch

 

I just don't know which wires go to which wires

I hooked up my own brake controller. It's a Tekonsha, but if I remember correctly you only need four of the wires. Mine is hooked up like this....

 

Controller: 4 wires

Blue------------>goes to Dark Blue on harness

White----------->goes to Black on harness

Red------------->goes to Light Blue

Black----------->goes to Red on harness

 

Harness: 5 wires

Brown-is for illumination, Not used in my case

Black

Light Blue

Red

Dark Blue

 

This is how mine is hooked up anyway. I repoed it from a Avalanche that we traded in. I cut the wires so I could see how it was origionaly attached in the Avalanche knowing I could reuse it in the new rig.

 

You do know where the harness plugs in under the dash correct? Little black box with nut on the left. There's only one place it'll fit, and the cover will show the location.

 

Don't forget to place the 40amp fuse in the FUSE CONTROL center under the hood. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

 

UPDATE: Just went back & looked at your post. Your hook up should be exactly the same, seeing you don't have the ILLUMINATION either.

Someone told me I might need a 20amp fuse, your saying 40? I think it read on the tag on the harness that you only needed the fuse if you have the second battery backup, I don't have the second battery. Is it pretty clear where the fuse will go in the fuse panel under the hood?

The fuse goes in stud#1 or stud# 2. It is one of those jumbo sized maxi fuses... It may appear that there is something already in there and possibly some paper glued over it, but it is just a dummy fuse.

20 or 40, I can't remember. The fuse that should've come with the harness! And just like the above post says, it goes either in the #1 or #2 slot. There should be a dummy fuse there.

Thanks guys. I knew I came to the right place for good info.

 

I went back and re-read the tag that was attached to the truck harness and it said to add the fuse if your vehicle DOES NOT have the aux. battery. Also it is a 40A fuse, it was taped to the harness from the factory and it went in the #1 post.

 

Good thing they make the connector able to only go into 1 opening in the box under the I/P. There were 4 openings so I plugged it into the one it fit into.

 

So far it seems to be working correctly. When I hit the brakes I see "E1" on the screen and the operation guide said that is what I should see when there is no trailer attached. I pick up my new trailer tomorrow so I'll know for sure then.

I'm picking up a 8 X 16 cargo trailer, tandem axel. I'm going to use it for hauling the quads and I'm thinking of adding some comforts to it so we can use it as a camper also. It would be better than sleeping in a tent. I'm not going to get too carried away. Besides, when I loose my job working here in the automotive ind. I can use it to start up a lawn maintainance buisness. :confused:

I just got a 94 Sierra 6.5L with a brake controller and another 6-port connector that has a red LED in the middle. Looks like a mini OBD plug. What is it?

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
