GMT-900 Recall

Don't know if anyone else has experienced the same problem or not?

 

My fuel guage, and DIC keep showing no fuel in my truck (5300)

 

I contacted GM and was informed there is a general recall on the truck. They need to reprogram the ECU w/ updated software.

 

I am not aware if this is the reason I am getting the wonky fuel indicators? I'll know more when I take my truck in on thursday.

Oh, I guess I should also mention that I am from Canada. Maybe this doesn't effect our Southern Brethren?

Yeah, maybe the ecu doesn't like converting gallons to liters and gets fouled up....

I happen to be in at the dealer today and they loaded the update. My truck wasn't showing any problems, but they said it would be good to get it done anyway.

Apparently a post card is coming out to all owners. The girl at GM said "recall", but could have been a slip of the tongue?

A recall is only for things that might put personal safety at a risk, I think she meant TSB.

Dealer told me it was "recall".

I have had this issue on at least 3 tankfulls to date but I dismissed it because I do a lot of off-road driving and it only has shown up off roading. Over 1/4 tank left and then the guage drops to zero when I am not looking and the DIC goes nuts saying I am empty. I check gallons used on the DIC and have only used less than 22 out of 26!

My buddy had the same problem with his 2000 Silverado... the gas gauge would just drop to E suddenly even though there was plenty in the tank. It ran like normal, he just did not rely on it and went by the trip meter and knew how many miles he could make it on a tank... I don't see how this could be a safety issue, so probably a TSB... but there may be more to it that makes it a recall safety issue.

Could be a safety issue if it resulted in you running out of fuel on an interstate or an expressway, especially in the winter.

I know two friends of mine had the same issue on their 99 and 00 Silverado's. I don't know if GM ever did anything about it or not? I think one got it fixed and one is just using his trip meter.

lol my 2000 just started doing it now. It goes back and forth and then just dies on E, but the guage still works 90% the rest of the time.

Anyone know if Westers has a fix for this yet? I don't want to have the steelership reflash my PCM and then have to pay for another tune from Westers! My truck has been doing this for at least a year. Only happens when full, or if I'm idling for an extended period of time. Not a major concern, since on long trips, it wroks fine. Will this fix eliminate the need to put a new sending unit in the tank, or am I missing the boat on this topic?
