Alright heres the deal, i drove the truck all day and i didn't notice a thing. Later that evening, i had to run out the store. Started up the truck fine, and i shifted into drive. Now as i was driving down the road, i notice that the truck (according to the instrument panel) said i was in neutral, well i down shifted once, until it registered on the instrument panel that i was in drive... I was slightly confused at this point, but kept driving.

When i came into the parking lot, i went to move the shifter into park and it parked. I went in the store, came back out and climbed back into the pickup truck... When i put the key in the ignition and tried to start it, nothing happened. Then i realized that according to the instrument panel, i was in 2nd. I moved the shifter up and down the steering column. No change. Still stuck in 2nd electronically. I disconnected the battery, and reconnected it. Same thing..

So in short, the truck according to the instrument panel says its in second gear, no matter what i do with the shifter, but im assuming the gearbox is working because it'll go into park and neutral. Obviously, the truck wont start because (im assuming) the computer chip thinks that the truck is in gear.

help please, my truck is stuck in a parking lot right now and im not sure where i should have it towed to or if this is a problem i can fix myself.

thank you all

The safety switch is bolted on the left side of the transmission, the shifter shaft goes through it,check and see if it's lose, otherwise you may need a need one.
