Hypertech programmer- 'Detonation'

Recommended Posts

So... i just programmed my truck (2004 GMC Sierra Z-71) with the hypertech power programmer and i noticed a rattling noise while under full throttle acceleration. I read in the manual about "Detonation" and how it can damage the engine. I'm not sure if this noise is "detonation".

I'm wondering what I can do to eliminate this noise if it is caused by detonation.

Could it be that something might be loose under the hood? I have a K & N intake...

plus the rattling noise does not occur when I rev the engine all the way up in park.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Ryan

Sounds like detonation to me. You will hear it most when the engine is under load such as climbing a gradual hill. Are you sure you are running the proper octane for the tune you chose. If you tuned for premium and you are running regular or even if it's your first fill with premium and you had quite a bit of regular in the tank, this could be causing it also.

If it's tuned for premium, try switching it to the regular setting and see if the noise stops.

I selected the 87 octane setting while programming and i just filled up with 87 octane. Right now that is what it's running. If i reprogrammed to 93 and filled it up with 93 octane, would that stop the detonation? also, could the detonation occur less often when it's cold outside?

I had the same problem and switching to 93 octane fixed it. It had more power and got better mileage on the 93 tune also.
