Fog light switch location?

Recommended Posts

I just ordered a pair of PIAA 520 Fogs and am debating where the best location is to install the rocker switch for them. My dash seems to be pretty full (no blank panels). Guess I should include a pic of my dash...maybe I'll add one later.

I wasn't sure about cutting a hole on the lower portion of the dash...I'd prefer the swtich higher up but then again, I'm not sure how bright the switch is. Could be annoying up high if it is very bright.

Any suggestions on switch location?

Thanks,

check with the dealer, maybe there's a place on the dash that's meant for a factory switch. You could exchange the aftermarket switch with a factory switch to match your panel and fit better.

I like the stock locations for switches (below the radio). If you don't want them there, I saw someone that had mounted switches in the overhead console which looked really good. This install even had LED's to show on/off.

Factory location for the fog lamp switch is right under the 4x4 switches. The factory location for the overhead cab lights switch is directly under the center most AC vent. This I know as I have both of the switches, but I don't have fog lights, or overhead cab lights!

I don't see any blanks on my dash. Under my 4x4 buttons I have a button for the cargo light and under that a button for the factory driving lights. To the right of the wheel I have the stereo and climate controls under that. Just to the right of the stereo is a vent w/ a cubby hole under it. I have the center console with a few cubbys in it as well. There are a couple of flat faces on it where I might be able to put the switch. The overhead console might be an idea too.

I'll snap a few dash pics tomorrow and post them. I don't have the lights yet. Hoping they'll get here by the weekend.

Thanks for all the input!

Dash pic. This isn't my dash but is almost identical to it, even the same color. There two differences between this dash and mine.

1. I don't have Auto 4x4 so I don't have the round button pictured above the 2H, 4H and 4L buttons. that part of the console is sort of rounded (convex) and has "4x4" printed on it. I could see about putting a round button there maybe. I'd like it to be illuminated though...I'd hate to accidentally hit one of the 4x4 buttons. when I get the lights I'll have to see what the PIAA switch looks like. I'm not even sure what color it lights up as.

2. Under the center vent I have a cubby hole unlike this dash which has a solid face w/ room for several buttons.

You could probably go to GM and buy the faceplate for the area under the vents (repalce the cubby with the faceplate). That would look clean IMO.

I checked w/ GM today. The blank plate for that hole w/ clips is $5. If I want to use a GM round push button switch for factory fit/finish it's $50.

I may go that route but what I'm thinking now is to convert my bed cargo light switch to control the new fogs. I have an ARE cab high topper on my bed and NEVER use the cargo light. I'm not sure if I can just unhook the cargo light wires from the switch and run the PIAA wires to it instead. That way it's located right above my factory driving lights switch. More convenient location for me and I get to keep my little cubby hole <cell phone fits nicely in it>. If I ever sell the truck or get rid of the fogs I can just hook the cargo light back up.

If the cargo light switch doesn't work then I'll buy the cover for the cubby hole.

Thanks,

great ideas for switch mounting. here's my issue. where to run the wires between engine bay and cab? I've twisted my neck like a pretzel and strained the back looking for a suitable place to run the wires thru. My jeep is easy-- just drill, add a grommett and ur done. This is different.

Ideas?

Its an '01 HD. Thanks
