2500HD Reg. Cab with 6.0L Motor and 5-speed manual

As I have not graduated high school yet, I can't buy a vehicle right now, but am thinking about trucks that I actually have a chance at affording when I do graduate.

My new venture for a vehicle would be to try and get a Summit White 2500HD Regular Cab LOngbed with the 6.0 Liter and a 5-speed manual. I don't have a whole bunch of friends that I particularly want to be hauling around so a regular cab SHOULD do fine for me.

My questions are: What do you guys think about the reliability of the 6.0 Liter motor? Are there quite a lot of performance upgrades if I thought that the motor was a little underpowered? How reliable would this whole package be? Would it be better for me to get an automatic instead of a 5-speed manual? I plan on lifting it 6" and putting 35s on it, would there be any problems?

My last question: what do you guys think about this whole package(reg. cab 6.0L with the 5-speed manual)? I mean, would it end up just being a PITA?:driving:

6.0 is a reliable motor and very strong. Some end up with a cold start knock but it doens't seem to affect longevity. There are upgrades available. Either tranny would be reliable but you might find it hard locating a manual.

I would think twice about a reg cab if I were you. I had the same thoughts as you when I got my first truck ('84 chevy K20 reg cab). There's just very little lockable storage and the passenger seat quickly becomes a pile of "stuff". It didn't take too long before I upgraded to an ext cab. Of course with the whole family thing now I gotta have the biggest they make :loser:

I completely agree with you. But regular cabs tend to be more inexpensive. Anything can be found on autotrader. And I drive a regular cab right now and the passenger seat doesen't become a "pile of stuff". There are only a few select things that end up in the front with me. As for lockable storage, you are completely right. That's food for thought.

IMHO, an extended cab is an absolute minimum. If you don't, you'll wish you did. If you do, you'll be glad you did!

If you are deadset on a regular cab, GMCHD's ride is one heck of a great looking truck. Being 6'5, I'm stuck with at least an extended for me...thinking crew this time around to replace Big Blue.

There is a problem with that right now though: I'm still in high school, I can't buy a truck right now-I just wish that I could.

I have also been talking with some guys over on the Diesel Place forum and they have suggestedd that if I would be towing a lot (and I would, about 8000lbs every weekiend two or three times) that I should either get the 8.1L or the Duramax. I think that it would be better for me to get the diesel because of what I will be using the truck for.

I went with a regular cab for some of the same reasons, also keeps the length of the truck shorter (better for plowing), I love the look of the "classic" pickup (long bed regular cab), and the insurance is much less for me with the regular cab- I'd say you're looking in the right direction. I LOVE the 6.0L in my truck! One question though- why are you going with a manual tranny as opposed to the heavy duty 4 speed auto?

I have owned many pickups in my life, and most were regular cab longbeds....I never found that to be an issue, but I usually installed an "acros the bed" tool bos for storage of "stuff".

THen I bought my 1st extended cab, and that is all I would ever buy, including the new 2007 I bought last week....it is just so handy.

My son (18) had a regular cab S-10 and loved it...then he complaained that there was no room for the subwolfers....so, now he has an extendcab, and the subwolfers fit nicely in the back, along with som "stuff" and he still used the "across the bed" tool box for more "stuff".

THe regular cab does fine, but the x-cab is just so darn convenient....wither one will certainly do the job.

I pull a fifth wheel trailer and I need a HD truck...I had a Dodge diesel and hated every miinute of it....lots of maintenance, can't just "start it up", had to wait to shut it off, etc. I then bought a V10 manual tranny Ford superduty...nice truck, but I had to get rid of it because of the manual...my left hip is bad and the heavy clutch gave me fits....

So now I have the HD 6.0 4.10 for towing, with an automatic and the x-cab....for me it is the perfect truck....it pulls hard, is not too awful on gas (about 14.5), is comfortable for a 3/4 ton, and it handles well....good luck and look around... sometimes you just find something by accident that is a great deal...
