Codes For Engine, Tranny, Rear End Size, Etc., Etc.

I'm clearly an mechanical idiot.......when looking at things to replace/fix/purchase/etc., everyone wants a different code and/or number to verify the correct part. Is there anywhere that lists all the codes, etc., like the engine is a LS1, Stage???, vortec??? when all I know it is a 4.8L. Ran into the same problem looking at gear change, have no idea if it is a 7, 8, 8.2, 9, etc., etc., how many pins, gears and crap. Looking for a list that has corresponding codes if there is such a thing. My truck is a 2006 Silverado, 4x4, 4.8L engine, think it has a 4L60E tranny, but don't know for sure, no idea what size rear end is or anything about the transfer case.

 

PLEASE HELP OUT THE VILLAGE IDIOT!

Impossible, your all not as mechanically stupid as I am!

 

Say I have a 10 bolt, 8.5 rearend, how do I know if it is a 28 or 30 spline?
