Speakers Speakers Speakers

I realize this has been discussed again and again; and I used the search function but still am somewhat in the dark. I have 2000 Silverado with the extended cab and factory radio. I bought new front and rear speakers from Crutchfields. I bought the Pioneer TS-G1641R 6.5 2-way for the front and Pioneer TS-G4641R 4x6 2-way for the rear. My question surrounds the tweeter. I'm sure that the harness from Crutchfield will probably eliminate the tweeter. Is this ok? Do I need to find a different (and seemably more expensive) solution for the front? I want to upgrade the sound from stock but realize I didn't buy expensive stuff. Thanks in advance.

Hi Terp,

I have a 2000 extended cab, and just bought new 6.5's for my front doors as well. The stock tweets will be eliminated, - the new two-ways have their own tweeters. No big loss, I don't think GM busted the bank on the stock stereo components.

If you wanted to go component speakers for the fronts, you could modify your new tweets to take the place of the old tweets, but I don't think that's necessary for good sound. In spite of the hype, components don't always sound better than coaxials and the new Pioneers should be a huge improvement.

Thanks for the reply. I just put the new ones in and they sound pretty good-a lot better than stock. I can't complain. I only spent $100 on all 4. Thanks again.

Hi,

I am replying here in an attempt to build my post count so I can ask a question. In the meantime, if anyone feels like walking me through the replacement of the factory speakers in my 1 day old 2007 Silverado w/out the Bose upgrade, I'd really appreciate it.

The sound is terrible compared to the infinity system i had in my Dodge. I was able to replace the fronts in that truck with an Infinity componet set of speakers and they sounded great. One concern with the Chevy is the fact that Crutchfield says I have to drill holes for tweets. Is that right? There are tweeter looking spots on the windshield support. Can I just put them there? Thanks for any help.

I bought my stuff from Crutchfields and everything you need is included except for sheet metal screws. I had to drill holes for my new speakers. The entire project of installing all 4 speakers took me less than an hour. I bagged the factory tweeters. I left them in but disconnected them. Keep in mind that I went cheap. I only spent $100 for both pairs. I stayed with "normal" speakers. I couldn't see spending a couple hundred dollars on component speakers for the front while keeping the stock stereo. I get decent sound from what I put in. If you really want to upgrade, look at the stereo unit first and build from there.

Where were your factory tweeters? It looks like the grills on my pillers can be popped off. I may try to look in there tonight to see what I'm dealing with.

Acutly i do find a difference in sound with compents then coax. I had a factory radio for a while and replaced my stock compents with new ones in the front and their was a big difference in sound i think.

I have confirmed that I have tweeters in the pillars, but I cannot get them out far enough to see how they are connected. Can I assume there is a crossover somehwere allowing me to just drop in a component system?

This should NEVER be true. Properly installed components should aways sound better. a $50 set of comps should outperform a $1000 set of coax's.

While that's a BIT of an overstatement, it does have an element of truth to it.

I've done both in the same truck with the same amp, and the components sounded MILES better.

But I was pushing 125-150 watts into each door...So that's going to make a difference in how they sound. Just pushing them off of the factory head, the coax is probably going to be just fine.

 LOL!

Wilson, i am really starting to think you have aboslutely no idea what a properly installed Comp setup sounds like..or is...or how to do one.

Oh, brother...

I guess I could have said that your statement was preposterous and absurd, but I really did laugh so the LOL was genuine. My purpose wasn't to flame you, just to put forth the idea that there's more than one side to this coin.

Realistically, the advantages/disadvantages of coaxials vs components is a matter of much debate, with most in favor of components at the high end due to the advantages of being able to control imaging and soundstage.

Wingnut's reply was genuine - I too chose components when I wanted high end amped fronts. The fact of the matter is, if you're mounting components in the stock locations without any special attention to imaging or phase arrival, you're not reaping the benefits.

On the cheap end ($100), components don't sound any better than coaxes - MB Quart used to make killer coaxes years ago. On the expensive end, it's hard to find coaxials at all, because anybody serious enough to spend over $500 on front speakers is going above and beyond stock locations.

So yes, I do disagree with your blanket statement, but probably wouldn't have even replied had it not been so grossly exaggerated. I mean really.

If you disagree, which you do, go ahead and post why, but try taking the high road and keep your assumptions about me to yourself - and I'll promise not to question your alleged qualifications you are so eager to repeatedly post. Fair enough?

Yeah, my bad. I didn't mean to get all huffy. Had a rough past month and the slightest thing sets me off, last night and finding that my God-Mother has bone cancer didn't help the situation.

Anyway, as far as higher end coaxials...the Aura Braxial sets are incredible. However, the tweeter is mounted off-axis so to be true to the term they are not actual coaxs. As far as great coaxes now, the Pioneer Premier rev series is great. Mb Quartz are reliable, however have a history of sounding harsh without proper attenuation.

And yes, anyone spending more then $150 on comps are going to have the want to go above and beyond stock locations. They will also want to have either sound deadened and sealed doors or kicks or something in the likes.

Again, i apologize. Didn't mean to flame ya.

But...you do have to admit. Components with the tweeter in the stock locations should still sound better then a coax because of imaging. Toss in a deck with time alignment like the Pioneer Premier 880PRS and you have infinitely improved your soundstage.

Sorry to hear you had a tough month. I've had my share, so I know what that's like.

I haven't heard Aura Braxials yet - it's hard to find high end car audio stores to demo these days now that the big box stores have smothered the market. I need to start searching nearby cities again. Hearing is believing, no?
