Owners Manual

OK, heres the deal. Being a technician for almost 5 years and working at dealerships for almost 11 years, I have seen numerous accounts of vehicle owners taking their vehicles to the dealer and asking questions about their vehicles, when the information is shown to them in their OWNERS MANUALS.

 

So much information is in this little book that all manufacturers provide to you.

 

So I want to know, who reads their owners manuals for information about their vehicles.

 

BE HONEST, because I know that a lot of people do not.

 

 

 

BTW, I have read my owners manual cover to cover.

Many questions posted on here are answered in the manual, a google search, or have already been answered on here. I've probobly asked a repeated question too, but I now use the search on here or google to find answers.

I don't just sit down and read though it but when I have a question about one of the features I won't hesitate to look at it. I mostly read my parents vehicles manuals because they have all the new fancy options on their vehicles, my truck is really not that difficult to figure out.

I just purchased an '07 sierra and I have gotten through most of the manual.I just wish it fit in the glovebox better

May be a "stupid" complaint..but I AGREE!!! Now, let's just hope that is all we get to complain about.

I can't say that I read it cover to cover because I don't drink and don't have any kids so I skip the drinking and driving part and the carseat part. But I always read the maintenance schedule and refer to other sections as needed.

I do read clear through it cover to cover, once I get past the safety admonitions and disclaimers. But these days a manual is HUGE! I complained to a dealer that I couldn't get my car in reverse. They politely told me I had to put my foot on the brake. God, that was a humiliating experience, but I had never had a vehicle you had to do that for. I'm sure there was a sentence in the owner's manual somewhere, but I just missed it. With all the gizmos on today's cars, I find the manual indespensible regardless. Cruise control on my Silverado, for example, is WAY different than any car I've ever had before. So I'm glad they are there and hope they don't make them into a PDF file any time soon.

I can't say I read, in depth, cover to cover, but I skim through it. If I have a question about a device or something, I'll look for it. For me, the real value of the manual is the technical stuff like fluid types and capacities, parts numbers and such. What I really need is a good repair manual(NOT Haynes) with torque specs and more technical stuff.

I read it when I need it. I use it a lot to figure out which fuse does what, and to see if it happens to list the replacement part that I need when something does break.

Wait, you didn't think you had to break before engaging forward or reverse gears from park?

Had to read it to find out how to work all the electrical equipment in the truck and how to set the clock.

My biggest gripe (with ALL Manuals) is when you look up a point and instead of giving a short answer, it tells you to "see (insert subject)".

I keep mine in the bathroom, in case there are no magazines to read.

I bet those that are on this site are more apt to read the owners manual.

 

I check there first. If that doesn't answer my questions I search/post here.

 

BTW there are certain important peices of information which are not there that should be such as torque specs for common maintenance items like lug nuts.
