Nbs Oil Change

gonna do the 1st oil change on my 07 NBS with z71 package. Do you guys remove the skid plate? It looks like the oil may drain on top of it. Also, the oil filter, do you guys poke a small hole in it before removing it? Looks like it will be messy compared to my old 99 5.3 z71. Just wondering.......looks like it is so close it may be messy.

PS- the drain plug is the one on the right/starboard side of the oil pan correct? Different location than my old truck.

Leave the skid plate on.

 

Its right on the bottom of the pan, easy to find, silver bolt. NO. 13mm

I don't know what your truck looks like underneath, but there was a post a long time ago about a guy who used an upside down gallon milk jug as a funnel. He was able to cut it so it would fit pretty well around his skid plate etc. and minimize mess.

 

I use a quart ziploc bag put it around the filter before I unscrew it. It's not 100% but does help. I've only poked a hole in my filter once to drain it, but for me didn't seem to help that much either.

New body style 5.3 Z71.

 

Plug is 7" to the right of the filter. (I think) I change mine while engine is hot and oil does come gushing out of the engine. Maybe got 3 drips on the Anti roll bar.

Changed mine this past Saturday. Had just under 3k on the odo. Used Mobil 1 5W30 and a Wix 57060 filter. Had a bit of a mess when I took the drain plug out. I mis-judged where to put the drain pan. Well, that's why they sell floor dry I guess.

 

I did not find any metal shavings on the magnet end of the plug, and could not feel any grittiness in the spent oil.

No shavings or anything on drain plug.....hell the oil still looked darned good for 5500 miles. GM installed the oil filter way to tight IMHO though. I popped a small hole in the center of filter and let it drain so there was no mess at all. The drain plug got me though........put my container way to right of the plug(but not far enough I guess) figuring it would spew out a good ways......it spewed about a foot off to the side making the mess on the floor. Least it wasnt on the truck though.

I just put Castrol GTX in mine but I did go for a Delco filter. Just as cheap as anything else.

I changed my oil a week ago and had some metal "paste" on the drain plug... had just over 2000k on the odo. Put Pennzoil platinum 5-30 in it and its running good... mileage has increased bout 1/2 mpg.

 

I didnt need to unbolt the skidplate, on my 94 2500 diesel I have to unbolt it and its a pia.

 

I also like how you dont spill oil all over the 4wd shaft like in the last few body styles, that was also stupid.

 

 

The only downfall is that the oil filter is a little tricky to get to, but i'll live w/ it, atleast we get some extra protection for it.
