10w-40 Oil In A 6.0l

OK, this is really stupid, and I apologize before hand.

 

I have a 2003 6.0L 2500HD Sierra with 54K on the clock. I just changed the oil and put in 10W-40. The world isn't going to implode or anything, right?

 

I know the manual calls for 5W-30 but it seems like with 10W-30 i have less valve clatter and during the summer it should not matter as much. Well, I drained the oil and was putting in the new when I saw I bought 10W-40 instead this time. I had two quarts in before I noticed and went ahead and put the rest in. Drove it with no problems, no problems with oil pressure....everything seems fine. But, I have a way of torturing myself thinking that I may be screwing things up running a heavier weight than called for.

 

Can I run it for the summer without any problems? I'll be draining and adding 5W-30 for the winter sometime in Sept. or Oct.

 

I'm not new to changing oil or fixing cars, but I'm used to 60's and 70's cars, not the new stuff that's out there today.

If its really hot there 40 shouldn't hurt much. But I would get it out before the 3K change time. 40 has an additive package for diesel engines not gas ones. It also may not flow properly into clearances, it has better viscosity but at the cost of larger molecules. But seeing you have a few miles on the truck and the clerences are a bit larger now it may not hurt anything.

 

I used to put 2 bottles of 40 with 3 of 30 in my old cars that had a lot of miles on them and it seemed to work well, but they were beaters that I bought for less than 500 bucks.

 

As for not hearing as much valve chatter with 10w30 I cant see why because its a 30 weight oil, just like 5w is. Just that the pour point is higher on the 10 and you cant use it at as low a temp. But in the warm weather all 30 weight oil will act the same, given it has the same additive packages. so this could be where you're getting the difference as 10w may have different additives than 5w.

Thanks, I was thinking the summer temps and with the mileage, I should be OK until things cool down.

 

I'm rather ticked off that I bought them without noticing the weight..I must be getting senile. It's Mobil One Semi-Synthetic and normally I run straight synthetic but was going cheap (short between paychecks). That'll teach me not to look better.

I find this happening more often lately to everyone. I bought 5 for the car before I traded it on the truck and when I got home I had 4 5-30 and one 10-40 I went back and noticed that they had all of the grades so close together that if you didn't look at the sticker on each one you were almost bound to pick up the wrong oil.

 

Lucky enough I noticed before I started the change or I would have used 40 as well.
