Growling When Turning In 4wd

Just picked up my 04 Sierra, it's got 54k on it and seems to have been a somewhat neglected work truck. Went to change the transfer fliud yesterday and drove it in 4x4 around the block for the 1st time. When making the corners it kind of growls and feels like you've dropped down a gear, growling is as good a description as I can think of. Feels and sounds okay when going straight. I know the 2 sides of the on road/off road in 4wd argument and don't know if that would have anything to do with it. I have yet to try it in 4wd off road so don't know if it'd act the same. 2wd is fine.

Is there a mechanism in the drive train for an 04 automatic that allows for slip when turning in 4wd?

Is this noise normal?

It's growling because you're on a hard surface and the front tires are fighting each other + the rear axle because they all rotate at a different speed when turning. There is no differential between front and rear axle on a part time 4x4 system. This is why the book says not to use 4x4 on hard surfaces. Worst case scenario you break a driveline component, at the very least you are severly wearing out your front tires.

Thanks for the info, I'll go try it off road.
