Check Engine Light - Gas Cap?

Recommended Posts

As I was driving earlier my check engine light came on. There was no change in driving, handling or anything else I could notice. I stopped by an autozone and had them hook it up to a scanner. They said the scanner showed a gas cap problem. My cap was on and it was tight. they aske dif I had filled up with the truck running and I said no. I took it off and put it back on and they said the light will probably go off. Is their some sensor in their or something. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Or what else could it be? Thanks

Buler..........Buler?

Uhm.......Yea. How about letting us in on what the code number was. Information is key and if it is provided you'll more than likely get some ideas to what could be the issue.

Ah what can I say? She was super hot and I was trying to be the MAN, I think I was sucking my gut in so hard I might have gone deaf. The light went out after a couple hours.

You would be the MAN if the error code she gave you was her phone number. Go back and try again!:ughdance:

edit: unless your refering to your bedroom light, then in that case yes you were the man

My check engine light came on, autozone said it was a air pump valve or the air pump fuse blown. I think the code was 420 or 402. I checked the owners manual and can't find the air pump fuse listed. Herlp.. I drive a 2001 Jimmy SLS 2 door

If you have an aftermarket locking gas cap, that might be the problem..It was for me, put the stock one back on, and no more problems.

Recently I filled up with gas and topped it off (real full). The Check Engine Light came one. I drove the truck for about 120 miles which including stopping a couple of times. The light finally went off. Sometime later I refilled the tank but didn't top it off. The light did not come on. A couple days later I filled up again and did top it off. After driving about 150 miles with a few stops the light turned off. So, I concluded that the gas cap was defective. I borrowed a friends code scanner and the diagnostic code was P0342.. low input on camshaft position sensor. I cleared the code and drove the truck and no code was set. I then went an purchased a new gas cap and put it on. Immediately the check engine light came on. I came home and read the diagnostic code. I have 2 of the P0342 codes. I remove the gas cap and put it back on. Cranked the truck a couple of times. Drove around the block a couple of times. Recheck the systems for codes. Didn't have any. So, it appears to me when I remove the gas cap and especially if I fill the tank I may get the check engine light but the code says camshaft position sensor.

I'm trying to make sense of this. Can't figure out if it is the gas cap or do I really have a position sensor problem.

All comments welcomed.

Sounds to me like you have a Camshaft Position Sensor problem. Replace it and see what that does.

I had the same thing happen last week. My check engine light was on for two days. It finally went out on it's own but now everytime I drive the truck it beeps and there is a message that shows up on my odometer telling me to "tighten gas cap". I've tightened it 4 times this weekend but it still gives me that message. I haven't gotten gas for 150 miles, the truck is a 2005 with 9900 miles on it.

Do gas caps go bad or break?

Go to Autozone and have them scan the computer for codes. You may have a Camshaft position sensor problem... my problem was not the cap even though my owners manual said that may be the cause. My truck nows fails everytime I crank it..ie sets the cam sensor code. And, now it is hard to crank. I have ordered a new sensor and should be delivered in a few day.
