07 Nbs Disappointing Performance

I bought an '07 silverado z71 4x2 5.3L (not flexfuel) and im dissapointed in its performance. Im not trying to light up the tires, but when i go to pass someone or accelerate quickly onto the express from a short onramp it feel likes a dam cow...The engine sounds liek its got power but she just doesnt...anyone else notice this? its got jsut over 800 miles on it so far.

I know exactally what you are saying. My old 270 hp 5.3 99 Silverado felt much more powerful than my 07 5.3 nbs. I think it is the fuel mgt junk. It is very disappointing. It is like the engine waits a second or two to decide if you really want to move out or not. It is like that way on all 07 NBS I have driven or ridden in. Pisses me off.

From what I can understand, and I can be wrong because I didn't do the research myself, and I don't have one of the NBSs, it is torque management that is your problem. If I understand correctly it reduces power when you are shifting so you don't blow the trans up. If and when you tune the truck, it will reduce the threshold (sp?) and unlock more power.

I don't think any of the handhelds right now completely remove it, but some of the tuners where you send the PCM core in and they program it can remove it.

I will repeat: I am not 100% sure about anything I said here, and I will readily admit I may be wrong, but from what I can understand from other places on this forum and people I know, that is your problem and your solution.

does it do it to protect the tranny? I would think the tranny could take a measley 350 ft/lbs.......if not then that is pitifull.

I don't know I am only relaying the information I was told, but I would assume that 350 ft/lbs over the course of 3-4 years would really do some damage to the trans. Even if it doesn't break the trans all at once it does stress parts.

Does the same tranny come in the 6.0s?

If this is the case, im really dissapointed in GM. Instead of building a trans that can handle the power, they produce a subpar one then limit the power of the truck so there marketing can claim its got this nice powerful engine and leave out the fact that they purposely reduce its output becuase the trans cant handle it...

Amen Cactus. Still find it hard to beleive though.

What your describing is GM infamous Torque Management. (aka Abuse mode). It retards timing at shift points as well as many other means of reducing torque spikes to protect the drivetrain from abusive torque spikes. It is GM's way of lengthening drivetrain life and providing a 5yr/100K warranty. I think it is cool technology, but I also think GM WAY OVERDID it. It makes sense in the sense that applying all of that torque at once to move a 5000+ lb brick is going to take it's toll on any drivetrain, unless you build it like a HD truck. but that would add significant weight. GM wants to provide the huge power/torque numbers while still maintaining a fairly lightweight system for economy purposes that will still stand the test of time.

With that said, I have plans on a tune to reduce this TM very soon. I won't completely eliminate it, but I want it reduced to a reasonable level. Oh, and don't feel bad, it's even worse on the 6.0 Vmax's. Your 5.3 will beat my 6.0 off the line.

So far, I have installed the GMPP CAI..... Magnaflow muffler and a performance tune is next. Then I get to put those cocky Tundra owners in their place. :wtf:

It is not that the trans can't take it it can, but thing about it is there are people that don't know how not to dog their sht. GM does not want to pay up to fix the trans. You can put a race trans behind it and for those people, while it will take longer, the breakage will still happen. Also would you rather pay another 7000 so that GM can do the R/D to build another trans? Would you then want to deal with the fact that you are beta testing that new technology. The 4L60E is a proven trans. They can handle it, but you will always have people that will find and open stretch of road and do burnouts until the trans overheats and then GM will have to pony up the money to buy another one, which they will then make up by guess what going up on the retail price of their vehicles. So which would you rather spending the $200 on a tuner, or spending the 7000 extra for a truck?

Please keep us up to date on the tune yo do. I guess I may end up doing the same thing or dumping the d**n thing.

Keep in mind, that it still has the HP/Torque for towing/hauling capability. The only thing it really affects is 0-60 times. GM sells their trucks based on capability, not streetlight racing. They have the Corvette for that.

But since I cannot afford a Vette, I am getting the tune. It's not even that I plan on racing my truck or abusing it. I just want the throttle response back.

I agree it is not a performance vehicle, but sometimes it feels like it cant get out of its own way. All I want is to at least feel as strong as my old 99 Silverado that had 45 LESS hp. GM dropped the ball bad here, if that is what is really happening.

I hear what you are saying...infact i think its a good technology. im all about extending drive train life :wtf:

Well cant gm tell though if someone was overheating the trans etc? i guess that opens up another can of worms though...still is irratating...

Like i said, im not he burning out type, infact i baby my vehicles, but there are times when i need to pass or need im climbing a moutain pass and im going wtf is wrong with this thing...

So does reprogramming void your warranty?
