Whats Wrong

My truck is not running good at stop signs. I recently replaced the alternator because it wasn't charging the battery. Ever since then it has been Idleing rough and choking down at stop signs. Could it be something wrong with my computer since I unhooked the battery to change the alternator. That is what my guess is. How do I fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2003 silverado with 5.3. I am an air conditioing service tech and usually try to do my own work on my truck. I also have a 2007 Tahoe.

Check your ground cable. My old '91 ran like hell at low RPM and wouldn't hold a charge due to a bad ground. Hopefully that'll be the issue, perhaps not but for $6 it's one cheap thing to check first.

if your battery went dead, or was disconnected for more than a few minutes, your computer has to relearn how to manage your engine and driving habits.

It should improve over the next few days.

Depending on your truck's mileage, you should also check/clean the throttle body/throttle plate area and IAC. If this is dirty (which it usually is) it will make the computer have to work harder to relearn.

 

Did you fully charge the battery before starting the truck with the new alternator?
