New Truck, Should I Wait For A Tune? Or Just Get It Now?

Recommended Posts

Jus picked up a NBS 1500, 5.3, LT1, Z71.

Got 800 miles on the clock now. I plan on getting a wait4me tune. I want to ditch the TQ Management crap and do a nice 87 octane tune, maybe 89. Any reason I should wait till the truck is broken in? or should I call Monday and let the modding begin?

Thanks,

Dan

I didn't! I had about 800 miles on the odometer when I installed my Edge Evolution! Go for it! The only problem you might encounter with your new truck is the lack of availability of the core ECMs. If GM Service were to re-flash your ECM due to an update, you'd loose your tune. I'm pretty sure Wait4Me would re-flash it but you'd be out the PCM when you sent it off for a new tune. So, I'd wait till they have Core PCM's available or the new SCT Hand Helds available before making that investment. I return my truck to stock before it goes to the dealership just in case...

I don't see any reason to wait for a tune. I would, however, caution you to put a few thousand miles on the engine before you start hot rodding around. New engines do need time to break in, so just keep that in mind.

I suggest doing alot of research before tuning your truck. I have and I am finding that handhelds, mail-order (Wait4Me, Wheatleys, etc) are NOT able to modify/remove TM, abuse mode, WOT Delay, etc. on the GMT900's yet. The only tuners that can (so they claim anyway) are the ones who do it live (with the truck) with EFI Live and usually a Dyno. But they also charge alot more (about $500+).

Evidently, GM is using an all-new ECM (E38) that uses all new software. It is very evident to me that GM has done everything it can to deter people from messing with TM. I was going to have my local professional tuner do mine for about $500, but that would mean I would no longer have access to my stock tune or PCM, which would most likely cause warranty issues if something goes wrong. So, I have decided to step back and wait until Diablo or someone (wait4me, etc) cracks the new software code and I can have my tune and stock PCM/tune too.

Good to know, thanks for all the info. Guess I'll just wait like you suggested. Hmmmm What to do now...

I started with the GMPP CAI. $311 shipped. It sounds nice, added some power and throttle response and looks nice. Once I get the tune and exhaust upgrade, it will then provide the performance it is capable of. For now it just sounds really cool under accell. Simple install too.

TM CAN be modified on the NBS GMT900's. Wheatley took 50% out on mine and 60% and firmer shifts in tow/haul mode. I'm almost positive it can be removed all together upon request. He also disabled AFM. Look at his website for pricing. www.gowheatley.com. From everything I have read from W4M customers, stay away from them. PCM's are hard to come by due to cost, but if you don't live near Houston and can be without the truck for several days, I highly recommend Charlie Wheatley for his customer service and pricing.

I ve done so much research on the NBS tune that I ve forgotten how many companies I ve spoken with. Just got an E mail back from SCT tuners and they said the 07/08 s are in Reasearch and development and maybe something in Oct... This is what most companies (Including Preditor) have told me. I had a custom tune which helped a little with the shifting but the WOT delay and AB are still a problem not yet solved. These compainies know the first one to the market with a FULL tune for the NBS will do well. My advise is the same as someone above, do the reasearh and don t let someone tell you they can do something they can t just to make a sale.

With your edge evolution were you able to de-activate your active fuel management? (AFM) Thanks.

I have the Volant CIA. What is the GMPP? I am not very happy with the Volant. I am unable to notice anything other than some added Exhaust noise. No real power to pedal gain! :chevrolet:

No, if anything the added power enabels the V4 mode to be engaged more while cruising at highway speeds, affording you a bit better gas mileage.

Interesting to read that TM is an issue w/ the trucks to... I thought it was only a sportscar thing. The C6Z06 comes w/ crazy TM from the factory as does the base C6.

People thing the C6 (base) is slow as it normally runs mid 12s at best and is most often in the higher 12s while the C5Z06 is a 12 flat car. Why? The d**n TM, but that can be tuned out w/ the proper software.

Good luck... these new trucks are gorgeous.
