161k Silverado...what Oil?

My 4.8L V8 Silverado has 161K miles on it. It needs an oil change soon and I want the motor to last as long as possible. What oil will allow my motor to last for thousands of more miles? I dont know what oil the previous owner used, whether it be conventional or synthetic.

 

Should I go conventional or synthetic? Any specific brand? Any other high mileage Silverado owners have luck with a certain brand?

I am not a fan of fad products and thought that was what "high mileage" oils were when they were first introduced several years ago. Well they are still around and we sell far more of them than I ever thought. From all indications, they serve a purpose and are good oil. If you have absolutely no leaks, I would have no issue with syn. However, if you have a small leak, syn will typically make it worse.

 

I would suggest a good high mileage oil like Valvoline along with a good quality filter, ie CARQUEST or NAPA both made by Wix or an AC Delco.

I run valvoline Max life synthetic since 90K, and I'm at 132K right now. I've recently run some compression and vacuum tests and she's checked out very nicely.

I have 150k on my 5.3 and I use Valvoline 5w30. I change it at 3k and the oil is pretty clean and it's full every time. I haven't felt the need to switch to high mileage...But maybe I should?
