Ok so about 2 weeks ago i switched over to a mobil 1 synthetic blend, and now when i start my rig up she ticks for a good solid minute... never did this before with regular oil, i'm concerned that this is in someway gonna mess up my truck... does anybody else rig tick like this... i mean sometimes i'll go to the store after it warms up and no tick and come out about 20 minutes later and its ticking on startup again... on an 80 degree day so i know its not cooling down that incredibly fast!!! gimme your thoughts am i just paranoid or is there something else wrong in this case?

My Completely non professional, and un educated oppinion.... Its Chevy tick... Every Chevy I have had... and all of my friends have done it; and I have run Mobile 1 in all of mine except for one of them. Dunno what causes it, but I would consider it normal... Unfortunately.

My '01 4.8 will tick/nock in the winter when it gets down to the 30's or below. Lasts for about 30 seconds. If I leave it for a few days in the summer, it will also tick/knock when I firs start it up. None of this ever happened til last winter. Still runs like a bear!!

It is the pistons guys...I think chevy uses forged pistons and they take a little bit to warm up

I'd say it's more likely the Mobil1 tick. Switch to Pennzoil Platinum and the tick will leave. I had the tick when I used Mobil1 now I use Penn Platinum and no more tick.

Talk like that could get an oil flame war started. :shakehead:

An a trick an old GM mechanic taught my now 89 year old Dad and that I still use is this: about every other oil change I add a half quart of transmission fluid (ATF) to the crank case of my vehicles and leave it in there for 100 to 200 miles. It is highly detergent and cleans the engine thoroughly, including gunk deposits. This is particularly good for quieting noisy valves. I then change the oil and filter and have very good running engines. This quieted my 2002 Suburban's 5.7 down and I have also used it on everything from Fords to Mercedes.

The chevy piston slap just means the parts are forged and machined to tight tolerances. The pistons have to warm up to fill the cylinder. synthetic oil is very thin and causes less resistance inside the engine. The dino oil may very well have dampened the sound of that tick.

thanks, i guess what I'm really asking is.. is this gonna hurt my engine down the road now that it's louder and lasts longer than when i had regular dino oil?

Short skirts=piston slap. I have never personally seen any PROOF that the slap causes damage, just some embarrasment.

I haven't done my 1st oil change in my truck yet, but plan on switching to a full synthetic (probably whatever is on sale at the time) so I'll have to wait and see if it happens to mine.

I do recall that when I was a Ford owner (previous life) the 5.4L Titan Engines had a terrible piston slap. Some sounded like a diesel when they started up on a cold morning! The GM's certainly can't be that bad!

Hey nothing against Mobil 1, I once used it exclusively but when Penn Plat. came out I gave it a shot and noticed no more tick. Besides the UOA's on Penn Plat are great!

I have used Mobil 1 in every vehicle, tractor, lawnmower, air compresser & engine i have owned since 1973. Never a noise caused, associated or caused by Mobil 1. Look elsewear for your noise.
